WHO WE ARE
About us
Nova - Social Innovation Centre is an independent and non-profit nongovernmental organization (NGO) that aims to promote the knowledge and practice of social innovation to develop the capacities of individuals and social movements to strengthen, through their own activities, their contribution to a just, peaceful and sustainable world.
Nova is implementing his work through 3 programmes:
1. Peacebuilding and Active Nonviolence
2. Alternatives to globalization
3. Governability and citizen participation
In terms of nonviolence and culture of peace, NOVA is implementing its activities through the first programme. The Peacebuilding and Active Nonviolence Program (NoVA) is an independent, non-profit and non governmental organization that develops and encourages international interventions for peace and provides assistance to populations affected by armed conflicts without any discrimination by race, religion or political ideology. With a global network of experts and professionals, NoVA offers support to the civil society in conflict areas in the field of violence prevention, peace building, mediation and nonviolent conflict transformation. Based on its experience in the Middle East, Europe and Asia, NoVA encourages the use and study of civilian-based, nonmilitary strategies to establish and defend international legality, equality and justice. As a committed and politically independent NGO, NoVA provides innovative ideas, analysis and publications intended to influence and lobby policies and practices of state and non state actors in Europe and the international arena for promoting the construction of an infrastructure for human security and effective action for peace.
WHAT DO WE DO
With a global network of experts and professionals and more than 50 projects implemented in the Middle East, Europe, Latin America and Asia, NOVA generates and disseminates knowledge providing direct support to civil society in conflict zones, promoting transparency and democratization of public institutions and developing the consensus of Barcelona on alternatives to globalization.
Regarding nonviolence and the culture of peace, NoVA is a pioneer in the development, design and implementation of international interventions for peace to bring aid to victims of armed conflicts, without discrimination by race, religion or political ideology. With expertise in the Middle East, Europe and Asia, NoVA works in cooperation with civil society and victims of armed conflict with numerous international networks, campaigns and initiatives of civil society in Europe and worldwide:
1. Promoting international action in support of peace.
NoVA promotes international action for peace by providing aid to victims of armed conflict, without discrimination by race, religion or political ideology. It also encourages the use and study of civilian rather than military strategies to defend international legality, equality and justice, strengthening the initiatives of people who suffer violence and can contribute to overcome. In cooperation with Nonviolent Peaceforce and the European Network for Civil Peace Services, we conduct international conferences and create materials to encourage institutions to promote the creation of an infrastructure for peace based on the promotion of a Civil Peace Services (SCP) .
2. Promote policies and practices of our institutions in the service of peace.
As a committed and politically independent, NoVA provides innovative ideas, analysis and publications that want to influence policies and practices of state and non state actors in Europe and other international forums in promoting the construction of an infrastructure service security and an external action for peace. We encourage the authorities and civil society to support the civil and nonviolent strategies in place in several international conflicts. We use the same tools to encourage the media to improve their coverage of nonviolent movements.

PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the second half of the Decade?

Regarding the promotion of international actions in support of peace, main progress are:
1. Nova started its intervention to strengthen the nonviolent movements aiming to promote a transformation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the 2006. After 4 years promoting and supporting the activities of the Bilin Popular Committee (www.bilin-village.org) nowadays we have established a national network of all the popular committees promoting a nonviolent struggle against the blatant violation of Human Rights in the region (www.popularstruggle.org)
2. Nova started its intervention to strengthen the iraqui civil society in 2005 when it was only possible to support them trough our offices in Amman (Jordan). Nowadays NoVA is supporting a network of more than 200 organizations working for peacebuilding and nonviolence (www.laonf.net) with one office in all the iraqui governorates.
3. Nova started its intervention in Lebanon in 2008 supporting peacebuilding activities through its field partner Permanent Peace Movement (www.ppm-lebanon.org/). Nowadays Nova has established a peace academy connected with the Beirut University that aims to be a training center for all the nonviolent movements acting in the Middle East.
4.   Nova has been working during the last 6 years on strengthening a Network including all the Middle East organizations actively working for the promotion of nonviolence movements, pecaebuilding activities and intercultural mediation ( http://www.acnv.net) nowadays more than 74 organizations are part of the network.
Regarding the promotion of  peace policies and peace practices of our institutions:
5. Last years we have seen importants progress on the establishment of Civilian Peace Services around Europe. Nova is promoting it locally, through an advocacy strategy in front of the spanish and catalan institutions and at the same is promoting it around europe (www.en-cps.org)
6. Important steps andd progress has been achieves in order to a nonviolent force with the capacibilityu to be deployed in conflict areas as a prepared, funded and trained force alternative to violence. (www.nonviolentpeaceforce.org)

OBSTACLES: Has your organization faced any obstacles to implementing the culture of peace and nonviolence? If so, what were they?

Global South (middle east):
1. Extreme levels of repression against peace movements in Iraq and the Palestinan Territories.
2. Lack of understanding about nonviolent movements
3. Extreme lack of effectiveness of most of the peace interventions in the middle east. Funding agencies are putting onstacles in order to fund it because NO results have been achieved through most of the activities that they fund.
4. Lack of strategic thinking and reflection of most of the nonviolent movements.
5. Bad environement for peace: most of the civil society acting in the middle east understands that peace is passivity in front of the blatant violations of human rights that they are suffering.
Global North:
1. Lack of knowledge of what kind of peace interventions can be done in order to promote the security of the north.
2. Lack of interest by governements and leadership at the moment that words must be facts.
3. Blatant incoherences between whishfull intentions for global peace and real policies fulling violence around the world.

PLANS: What new engagements are planned by your organization in the short, medium and long term to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence?

GLOBAL MOVEMENT: How do you think the culture of peace and nonviolence could be strengthened and supported at the world level??
