Yap Italy's main activities are international voluntary workcamps, projects during 2-3 weeks, aimed to promote intercultural learning and the support of local development initiatives with a solidal spirit. We work as sending organization to our partners abroad and as organizers of those taking place in Italy, toghether with local organizations (NGOs, associations, public institutions, informal groups). Workcamps organized by YAP Italy are more than 25 per year, covering a wide range of topics, from culture to social work with disadvantaged people, from environment to the work with children. Every year, prior to the beginning of summer workcamps, YAP organizes two tranings for workcamp leaders in Rome and Bologna, based on conflict solving skills, interculturality, project management, international volunteering basis.
YAP Italy also organizes middle- and long-term volunteering projects in "Third World" countries, and works as income and outgoing organization for European Voluntary Service projects within the EU's Youth in Action programme. Outgoing volunteers are regularly given pre-departure training in Rome.
Apart from its standard work, YAP Italy often carries out local projects within schools, disadvantaged areas, universities, as well as seminars, open debates and presentations:

Finally, YAP Italy publishes a quarterly issue of the review Cittadino Globale and a newsletter.

PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the second half of the Decade?

It is hard to quantify progresses obtained, as local projects remain, in spite of the efforts of many organizations, drops in the sea. However, most of the projects carried out in the last 5 years were successfully implemented and, without any doubt, the impact on participants, local communities and partner organizations was significant.

OBSTACLES: Has your organization faced any obstacles to implementing the culture of peace and nonviolence? If so, what were they?

As for many voluntary associations, YAP Italy has to cope on an everyday basis with financial  shortages, as well as limited human resources. Communication remains an important gap to be filled: as getting attention from main media is virtually impossible, reaching a wider public remains an hard struggle. Being a volunteering-based organization, which YAP Italy considers a fundamental value, nevertheless results quite time-demanding for volunteers (mostly University students). Finally, a general worsening of the public attitude toward inclusion and non-discrimination issues, increases the challenges YAP Italy has to face.

PLANS: What new engagements are planned by your organization in the short, medium and long term to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence?

In YAP Italy's agenda figures first of all the 2010 workcamps season. In addition the following projects are in progress:
- European Commission's Amicus action with the association Papa Giovanni XXIII, Yap Ro, SJ, AS JC, GTR, Youth center Corinthia, Emilia-Romagna Region and municipality of Rimini.
- EVS projects in Chapas, Palestine and Africa.
- "Young peace reporters", a multitask project with students and young volunteers from San Giorgio a Cremano aimed to the creation of a museum-laboratory of peace, involving English and photography courses, the creation of a reportage, a peace march and an international workcamp.
- Educareintegrare, a project about integration and interculturality with schools the province of Bologna with an high number of immigrant students.
- meeting in Bologna with a journalist correspondent from Iraq, Afghanistan and Haiti.

GLOBAL MOVEMENT: How do you think the culture of peace and nonviolence could be strengthened and supported at the world level??

By sensibly increasing cooperation and coordination among organizations, NGOs, associations and public bodies, rationalizing the existing coordination structures more effective results can be obtained. Yap Italy works constantly in this sense.
