PARTNERSHIPS AND NETWORKS: What partnerships and networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the global movement for a culture of peace?

Our foundation's main goal is to promote Peace, Cooperation, and Non-Violence. It is a founding member of the International Federation for Human Rights in Spain. It is linked to the Spanish Association of Foundations, the Spanish Coalition for development, the ONG coalition with a Special  Status of the United Nations, the International Peace Bureau (IPB), the Millennium  People's Assembly, UNITED (against racism), Securipax Forum of Unesco, and  Airline Ambassadors, an NGO in the US. Since 1999, the NGO has been granted the Special Consultative Status of the UN (by ECOSOC).

ACTIONS: What activities have been undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the ten years of the Decade? If you already made a report in 2005, your information from 2005 will be included in the 2010 report.

Since 1986 Paz y Cooperación (PyC) organizes a School Award for peace, in which scholars and educators are invited to participate in various categories according to their age. The aim of this award, which ceremony coincides with the anniversary of the death of Gandhi and the Spanish School Day of Non-Violence and Peace, is to sensitize children, teenagers and adults on topics which encourage tolerance, mutual respect, understanding and equality through creativity and a massive participation. Some of the last public information campaigns on human rights and peace these past few years were:
2001: "All together, we can"
2002: "Globalization: the Great Challenge of the Millennium"
2003: "A Better World for All"
2004: "Universal Dialogue of Cultures"
2005: "For a World without Violence"
2006: "For a Planet without Gender Violence"
2007: "My Right to Decide"
2008: "Water for All"
2009: "Peace and the United Nations"
2010 (in progress): Take Care of your Planet: All against Climate Change"
On the other hand, Paz y Cooperación develops its mission regarding cooperation and development, education and human rights at a global scale. Several projects have been presented since 2000 in accordance with the Millennium Development Goals to help local communities in their efforts to develop on a long-term basis. The main areas were India, Middle-East, Africa and Latin America.
The foundation participated in meetings of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe in connection with the human aspect. PyC actively cooperates with the Human Rights Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Spain.

PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the second half of the Decade?

Between 2005 and 2009, the number of participants to the School Awards has increased from 4997 to 6514, and new countries have brought large-scale themes of the world to centres of education. It is an achievement that we are positive to and proud of. According to the cooperation for development, we receive each day new projects from developing countries.

OBSTACLES: Has your organization faced any obstacles to implementing the culture of peace and nonviolence? If so, what were they?

We are working on the collaboration with Arab countries involved in conflicts, and we have earned a certain commitment. Each year there is more participation from these countries to the School Awards, with Iraq in 2009 for instance.

PLANS: What new engagements are planned by your organization in the short, medium and long term to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence?

Within the next few years, PyC will go further with its commitments in the endogeneous development of the disadvantaged countries and people, and the School Award for a greater awareness to non-violence and peace. We will go on enlarging the participation of students and teachers and increasing public awareness of our values.

GLOBAL MOVEMENT: How do you think the culture of peace and nonviolence could be strengthened and supported at the world level??

With a plan of action which involve children and teaches them to reject violence and the importance of peace, for them to think, express their opinion and change the future.
Cooperation, dialogue and attention are needed, in vulnerable countries especially; actions at a global scale, but obviously education and access to culture of peace at a local scale is compulsory.
Finally, consciousness raising and creativity are a way to educate open and conscient minds who will organize into a network of Peace.
