PARTNERSHIPS AND NETWORKS: What partnerships and networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the global movement for a culture of peace?

The American Corner in Ahmedabad is a partnership between the American Library, U.S. Consulate in Mumbai and Ahmedabad Management Association.  We had arranged some programs in collaboration with The American Consulate General, The American Library Mumbai, some with local NGOs, educational institutes (Colleges, Universities) and organizations working on the same objectives.

ACTIONS: What activities have been undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the ten years of the Decade? If you already made a report in 2005, your information from 2005 will be included in the 2010 report.

The American Corner Ahmedabad inaugurated on Sep 8, 2004. It provides information on recent trends and information on USA. I came to know about a Culture of Peace and Non-violence activities launched by UN in December 2004. I recognized that my day to day functions and activities are similar as mentioned in the manifesto lunched by UN.

I started research and to study in-depth on it. Then, I came to know about Transcend University and its different courses. I joined and completed a course on “Building Peace Education” under the guidance of Prof. Alacia Cabezudo in year 2007. I also joined a Doctorate on Peace Studies in year 2006 at Gujarat Vidyapith’s International Peace Research Center.

On the basis of my research work, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, Department of State selected me for “The International Visitor Leadership Program” for 2009.

To promote a culture of peace, we have arranged different types of programs based on different themes. Please find below the list of programs, speaker, date, place and number of participants. Most of the programs arranged at The American Corner, AMA.

PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the second half of the Decade?

During the second half of the Decade (2005-2010) I designed different programs based on different themes and observed a slow and steady progress towards a culture of peace among our visitors, patrons and participants through informal activities. Moreover, I had chance to convey message of peace to my colleagues those who work with The American Corners and Consulates libraries across world.

OBSTACLES: Has your organization faced any obstacles to implementing the culture of peace and nonviolence? If so, what were they?

The biggest obstacle is that most of the people do not have any idea about the decade.  Even they do not have any idea about what is peace? What is culture? Education does not give any assurance about peace. Education seems to be a limited concept in terms of Peace building. Moreover, People do not want any direct activities related to peace because they have a lot of fear and perceptions that if they involve in any direct activities on peace they will become a target of terrorists. They have threatened by terrorism.

PLANS: What new engagements are planned by your organization in the short, medium and long term to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence?

I work with The American Corner as a librarian. I am going to set-up a new project within a couple of weeks to promote a Culture of Peace and Non-violence in India as well as in different countries across the world. I have been seeking an active and a dynamic support from the United Nations as well as local government and non-government agencies to launch and promote a new global movement on peace.
I am pursuing a Doctorate on Peace Research and probably complete by 2010. I have been writing a proposal on Peace education and I would like to implement a global movement by the United Nations.

GLOBAL MOVEMENT: How do you think the culture of peace and nonviolence could be strengthened and supported at the world level??
