DEMOCRATIC PARTICIPATION

PARTNERSHIPS AND NETWORKS: What partnerships and networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the global movement for a culture of peace?

IFUW,
Sorroptimist International,Coalition For IDPs Rights, Georgian Disabled Women International Association,  NGO coalition Public Advocacy

ACTIONS: What activities have been undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the ten years of the Decade? If you already made a report in 2005, your information from 2005 will be included in the 2010 report.

1.Project Five-O. 2005-2007. with the cooperation of S/I of Europe Club Tbilisi. - Training centre for   girls 16-22 years old, refugees 25-50 years old   from Abkhazia and  South Osetia and orphan  and homeless girls living in “Future Children House’.’ 30  refugee   girls were trained in child, elderly and patients  care ( 5 refugee  girls were trained in sewing    
and   two of  them are now working in our Atelier “Optimist“ as assistants.

We also assist our best trainees to study in  different  schools and colleagues in   order  to support them in continuing  their education.

2. Pacifist Project ,,Peace way" 2008-2009. Action-  Exhibition tour ,,The Flowers of August" in whole    non-occupied territory of Georgia  - Telavi, Tbilisi,Gori, Kutaisi, Zugdidi, Batumi.  With the representatives of Co ‘Georgian Felt’ and trainees of BRPID project ,,Women for Eco-Art"

3. Summer campus for children from  Didi and Patara Liakhvi and Akhalgori, (occupied territory of Tskhinvali region)  July 2009 – by the cooperation of  the Coalition of IDPs Rights,  18 children, IDP s after August War 2008 , rested for two  weeks  in Kobuleti ,Adjara AR region. The chairman of the Supreme Council of Adjarian AR Mikheil Makharadze met these children. ID Children went sightseeing in Adjara.

4. February 2010  Signature on the  Memorandum of Understanding of Georgian 25 NGO  on the Promotion of Fair and Transparent Local Elections in 2010. Given the importance of the 2010 Local Government Elections for the democratic  future of Georgia and its stability, NGOs operating in Georgia and signatories of this memorandum declare their willingness to promote a healthy environment in which the elections can be held in a free, competitive, lawful and stable manner.

5. For the The Development of diplomacy in Georgia in March 2009 was founded Public Diplomacy Center, which represents a Non-Governmental organization, which supports implementation of diplomacy at every level: individuals, groups, between different movements, between countries, between governments, etc. The activities of our organization include trainings, seminars, live and online discussions, evaluating current events by diplomacy values, conducting researches and publishing results.  

Public Diplomacy Center has arranged a special press-conference at Free Thought House. March 2009 - The center representatives objected to the content and motive of ‘Put in Disco’ song. ‘The song has offensive and political content; this will further tense Georgia-Russia relations’. It is badly affecting our image in the world and puts many Georgians living in Russia under more threat. It won’t bring anything but political tension’.  
 
Considering the ongoing political tension and occurring events Public Diplomacy Center and Open Diplomacy Association proposes ’ 6 steps of peace’ to the whole Georgian society, opposition and government.

PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the second half of the Decade?

After August war  In Georgia number of IDPs - more than  228 thousand, 51 300 are children and teenagers. Great part of whole population is unemployed and country 's boundaries are uncertain. Only desire of tolerancy, social development, informational security  and peace is not enough for further development.

OBSTACLES: Has your organization faced any obstacles to implementing the culture of peace and nonviolence? If so, what were they?

The biggest obstacle we face is lack of funding and August war 2008, also Inadecuacy of society towards peacekeeping initiatives and inability of Government for receiving these initiatives.

PLANS: What new engagements are planned by your organization in the short, medium and long term to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence?

Creative of "Peace House" with partner  organizations,strengthening of peace education at school and university levels, organizing public actions and establish Peace Festival in Gori, Zugdidi and Batumi

GLOBAL MOVEMENT: How do you think the culture of peace and nonviolence could be strengthened and supported at the world level??

There could be a world-wide campaign to change the existing pattern of aggression, including avoid of all forms of informational agression to peacefulness; Sustainable development strategies for new  approaches to meet the MDGs
