SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

PARTNERSHIPS AND NETWORKS: What partnerships and networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the global movement for a culture of peace?

IGSSS mobilise youth networks for climate change, peace and livelihood. IGSSS is also active member of SPHERE and IAGs in India.

ACTIONS: What activities have been undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the ten years of the Decade? If you already made a report in 2005, your information from 2005 will be included in the 2010 report.

Responded to human crisis with relief and rehabilitation, promoted and funded action research on traditional conflict resolution mechanism, supported fellowships and scholarships for youth of NE experiencing conflict backdrop. IGSSS has strategically picked empowerment as themes for all sectors that we work in.

PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the second half of the Decade?

Particularly in NE region, yes.  Though issues have yet to be settled, armed groups have agreed to talks and ceasefires paving the ways for development and investment in the region.

OBSTACLES: Has your organization faced any obstacles to implementing the culture of peace and nonviolence? If so, what were they?

PLANS: What new engagements are planned by your organization in the short, medium and long term to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence?

India presently has over 600000 conflict induced IDPs and majority are in NE India. IGSSS plans to take up issues of IDPs of NE starting with the case of Bru-Riang displaced persons in Tripura from 2010. Also in our livelihood programme -Peoples Empowerment & Accesibility For Rights to Livelihood (PEARL) areas of 7 districts of Assam and Manipur we have plans to address co,,unity issues such as human trafficking, conflict, gender and displacement.

GLOBAL MOVEMENT: How do you think the culture of peace and nonviolence could be strengthened and supported at the world level??

Agencies positioned in international borders particularly NE India can and must collaborate to impact the neighbouring states/countries undergoing conflicts or recovering from conflits. Experience in NE with decades of lessons learnt could be logistically reached and shared with Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Bhutan, Tibet etc.
