ACTIONS: What activities have been undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the ten years of the Decade? If you already made a report in 2005, your information from 2005 will be included in the 2010 report.

In 2008 we established a 'focus'  in Peace education for graduate students enrolled in our Masters or Ph.D. degree.

In July 2007, Hawaii became the first state to officially recognize the United Nations International Day of Peace, celebrated annually on September 21.  See: peace.oceanit.com Every year we have presented a program on this day and/or spread across several days to include community partnerships in joint activities celebrating peace day, e.g. art contests, K-12 and post-graduate program forums for teachers (with themes focusing on non-violence & bullying (2008), sustainability (2009)).  This day is celebrated on all islands in Hawaii - Oahu, Maui, Big Island, & Kauai.

In 2008 Fall we initiated the Hawaii Schools Peace Garden project which is a branch of the International School Peace Gardens program based in Canada.  See http://www.ihtec.org/index.php?id=77

We continue to explore ways of building a culture of peace in all aspects of education and link with the community organizations, NGO's, and state legislature.

PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the second half of the Decade?

We have seen the growth of more public awareness of the need to make conscious efforts by every person in every day life by the increase in the numbers of attendance at the Peace Day Hawaii celebration.  Because many of these efforts have been recently initiated, we have yet to establish assessments for measuring our effectiveness.

OBSTACLES: Has your organization faced any obstacles to implementing the culture of peace and nonviolence? If so, what were they?

The obvious obstacle is funding that would support our expenses.  All of our activities are on a volunteer basis and attempts to coordinate many independent agendas.

PLANS: What new engagements are planned by your organization in the short, medium and long term to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence?

Continue to build a peace education program within the College of Education at the University of Hawaii dedicated to teacher and administrative peace education K-12.

Continue to find avenues for integrating peace education into the public and private school institution as part of the core curriculum.

Continue to develop research projects in peace education and make linkages to other countries around the world.  So far we have linkages with China and Japan, but still working on possible exchange and research possibilities.

We continue to explore ways of building a culture of peace in all aspects of education and link with the community organizations, NGO's, and state legislature.

Continue to reach out to unify the various community efforts under the umbrella of peace.

GLOBAL MOVEMENT: How do you think the culture of peace and nonviolence could be strengthened and supported at the world level??

The United Nations should provide opportunities for student/teacher exchange at all levels K-12 and university levels that result in developing peace education curriculum and learning from each other in peace philosophy, culture, and all aspects of formal and informal education.
