DEMOCRATIC PARTICIPATION

TOP PRIORITY: The organization's most important culture of peace activity

UNDERSTANDING, TOLERANCE AND SOLIDARITY

PARTNERSHIPS AND NETWORKS: What partnerships and networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the global movement for a culture of peace?

Our organization is involved in youth partnerships in the EU level, especially in the field of youth work.

We are also involved in networks such as the Anna Lindh Foundation, World Youth Alliance, Youth Service America, International Association on Volunteer Efforts, Alliance of Civilizations, etc.

ACTIONS: What activities have been undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the ten years of the Decade? If you already made a report in 2005, your information from 2005 will be included in the 2010 report.

PEACE BAG FOR EUROPE - a training course on peace and conflict work, that brought together youth from Europe and the Caucasus. Education about the culture of peace was the main theme, while creative conflict transformation and conflict analysis were also undertaken by the participants.

VOICES FOR PEACE - an activity held last September 2009, where we collected 400+ messages of peace from children and adults during the Festa de la Merce held in Barcelona. The activity was also held in celebration of the International Day of Peace, September 21. The messages collected can be seen in http://catalunyavoluntaria.cat/art/

WORLD MARCH FOR PEACE - we have also participated in the welcoming of the World March for Peace delegates in Barcelona.

PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the second half of the Decade?

We have just started our work on the culture of peace in 2009. But in general, we believe that there have been improvements in other actions, such as more opportunities for participation among youth. We have also seen more visibility of youth projects with topics related to peace and understanding among the projects that we have been collaborating with.

OBSTACLES: Has your organization faced any obstacles to implementing the culture of peace and nonviolence? If so, what were they?

As if 2009, general obstacles were:

1. Lack of information among people about the Culture of Peace and the UN Resolution and the programme of action.
2. Lack of awareness about the difference between CULTURE of PEACE and PEACE. Lack of knowledge about Peace as a way of life.
3. Lack of visibility of projects on the culture of peace from which organizations can copy or collaborate with.
4. Lack of resources to further Culture of Peace initiatives.

PLANS: What new engagements are planned by your organization in the short, medium and long term to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence?

Medium-Long Term: The organization, along with the support of the Anna Lindh Foundation, has started a long term project on Peace and Intercultural Understanding among youth in the EuroMed region. This project is 3-phase project for youth which consist of 1) training/capacity building, 2) local piloting of strategies and 3) networking and linkaging. The project, Peace Bag for EuroMed Youth brings together 18 organizations from the EuroMed region who will work on a toolkit on how to engage organizations to talk about and include a dimension on peace and intercultural education in their work. The project, which will commence in 2010, hopes to set an example for more initiatives to be done.

GLOBAL MOVEMENT: How do you think the culture of peace and nonviolence could be strengthened and supported at the world level??

1) By creating a global database of organizations working on a Culture of Peace, their expertise and resources.
2) To extend the fruits of the Decade of the Culture of Peace beyond 2010 through a network that will facilitate its growth beyond the decade.
3) To pressure policymakers in the UN level to include the Culture of Peace in their agenda.
4) To continue/ start advocacies for the Culture of Peace done in regional spheres (League of Arab States, ASEAN, EU, Latin America) as well as the UN and other international bodies.
