EDUCATION FOR PEACE

PARTNERSHIPS AND NETWORKS: What partnerships and networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the global movement for a culture of peace?

Pax Christi International is an umbrella group for dozens of Member Organizations in numerous countries and regions throughout the world.  These organizations dedicate their efforts toward creating an environment of peace by working in the area of disarmament, demilitarization, peace education, religious and ethnic reconciliation, and various other endeavors which work to bring about regional and global peace.

ACTIONS: What activities have been undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the ten years of the Decade? If you already made a report in 2005, your information from 2005 will be included in the 2010 report.

Over the past decade, Pax Christi International has been the secretariat for all other Pax Christi organizations and also works with numerous Member Organizations which all concentrate their efforts in creating an environment of peace on a regional and global level.  Work has been done throughout all regions of the world to bring together conflicting religious groups, lobby politicians and other people in power, and advocate for peace on a global level.

PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the second half of the Decade?

Over the past decade, Pax Christi International’s work toward peace has seen accomplishments in helping to build a global peace.  With help from its Member Organizations, we have been able to have a presence in all regions of the world where conflict exists and peace is needed.  Due to our headquarters being located in the Capital of Europe Brussels, Belgium, we are located near institutions such as the European Parliament and the European Commission and have therefore been able to act as a voice on a global level for our Member Organizations and those who they serve.

OBSTACLES: Has your organization faced any obstacles to implementing the culture of peace and nonviolence? If so, what were they?

As in any movement working toward creating an environment of peace throughout the world, obstacles will stand in the way.  Creating peace is an obstacle in itself.  In all regions of the world in which we work, there are different setbacks in our mission toward peace, yet we continue to work on a global level toward resolving and reconciling the differences which stand in the way of reaching our goals.

PLANS: What new engagements are planned by your organization in the short, medium and long term to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence?

We will continue to work in the areas of human rights, human security, disarmament and demilitarization, and toward creating an environment of peace throughout the world and in regions where conflict is present.

GLOBAL MOVEMENT: How do you think the culture of peace and nonviolence could be strengthened and supported at the world level??

It is our belief that a culture of peace and nonviolence can only be created when conflicting parties are brought together to reconcile their differences.  Too often, conflicting interests stand in the way of constructive dialogue and therefore works against the efforts in creating a sustainable peace.  It is Pax Christi International’s mission to work toward reconciling the differences which hold people and parties apart so as to create an environment of safety, security and peace in all areas of the world.
