PARTNERSHIPS AND NETWORKS: What partnerships and networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the global movement for a culture of peace?

Coalition for Palestinian Rights, Haiti Justice, Immigrant Rights, Iraq Peace Action Coalition, Middle East Peace Now, Minnesota Alliance of Peacemakers, Minnesota Coalition on Gaza, Minnesota Coalition for a People's Bailout, Alliance for Fair Federal Immigration Reform in Minnesota, Iraqi and American Reconciliation Project, Coalition of Conscientious Objection, Minneapolis Sister City Project, and Muslim Peacemaker Teams.

ACTIONS: What activities have been undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the ten years of the Decade? If you already made a report in 2005, your information from 2005 will be included in the 2010 report.

-WAMM has organized 20 major peace marches for world peace.
-Organized weekly vigils against sanctions in Iraq,
-Hosted 10 interfaith memorial services for the children who have died as a result in Iraq.
-Established an ongoing relationship with a water project in Iraq, and hosted sales of Iraqi art to finance it.
-Created a Sister City Program between Minneapolis and Najifa, Iraq
-Worked on public awareness on the harm of depleted Uranium that weapons cause.
-Established a weekly vigil for Peace in the Middle East.
-Established an Internship Program for college students.
-Created a coalition to inform students about their rights to be conscientious objectors and not participate in war.
-Created a counter-recruitment information program to let students know the hazards of joining the military.


PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the second half of the Decade?

WAMM has conducted 560 vigils against the sanctions in Iraq, bringing local public opinions against US military sanctions in Iraq and causing local churches to violate sanctions by donating medical supplies to Iraqi civilian hospitals.
WAMM has trained 50 college students through internships to grassroots organize for peace and justice. Many of these interns are going on to major in peace and justice studies.
WAMM brought 15 community leaders from Najifa, Iraq to Minnesota to find out ways we can cooperate to take care of environmental hazards caused by war, to re-establish businesses, to restore electrical and water supplies, and to train doctors and nurses to deal with birth defects and injuries that were a result of war.
WAMM set up databases at 10 area churches to hold conscientious objector files, and trained 100 religious and community leaders on how to set up conscientious objector files.
WAMM community organized to create a citizen's group that passes legislation that offers free testing for radiation exposure to Minnesotans who serve in the military.
WAMM hosted 120 free movies and discussions on war and its hazards.
WAMM has hosted 560 demonstrations outside weapons manufacturers, Alliant Tech, causing public opinion to support arms limitations and allowing thousands to protest.
WAMM has influenced public opinion so that Minnesotans have consistently chosen to support anti-war candidates in the last 5 years.

OBSTACLES: Has your organization faced any obstacles to implementing the culture of peace and nonviolence? If so, what were they?

WAMM has had funding cuts from local Zionist businesses due to WAMM's support of peace in the Middle East.
WAMM's members continue to be leaders in area organizations for world peace.

PLANS: What new engagements are planned by your organization in the short, medium and long term to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence?

WAMM plans to get local colleges more involved in the Iraqi American Reconciliation Project.
WAMM plans to launch a major campaign on human rights.
WAMM plans to step up education for conscientious objection.
WAMM has launched a project to educate Minnesotans on the plight of residents on the Gaza Strip.

GLOBAL MOVEMENT: How do you think the culture of peace and nonviolence could be strengthened and supported at the world level??

Programs like the Iraqi American Reconciliation Project and Sister City Projects help create peace on a world level.
WAMM's educational focus on the hazards of weapons helps to bring about international arms limitation agreements.
Information on conscientious objection ought to be given in every school in every nation so that children know that there is and always has been, a group of people in the world that will not fight wars.
