TOP PRIORITY: The organization's most important culture of peace activity

EDUCATION FOR PEACE

PARTNERSHIPS AND NETWORKS: What partnerships and networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the global movement for a culture of peace?

Global Campaign for Peace Education (GCPE); Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict (GPPAC); Pax Christi International (PCI)

ACTIONS: What activities have been undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the ten years of the Decade? If you already made a report in 2005, your information from 2005 will be included in the 2010 report.

Peace Education Trainings for youth groups as well as other groups (community women, church workers, local government units, etc.) but more especially for Philippine and Southeast Asia educators. For the latter we cooperate with GPPAC. We have also advocated the mainstreaming of peace education in basic education and teacher education. This is the goal of the GCPE, that is, to universalize peace education. Other advocacies include the campaign against small arms and campaign for respect for human rights and international humanitarian law. Part of the latter is the action against sexual violence perpetrated on women during armed conflict.

PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the second half of the Decade?

Yes, I would say there has been marked progress. The activities have multiplied and the people’s response has become more positive.

OBSTACLES: Has your organization faced any obstacles to implementing the culture of peace and nonviolence? If so, what were they?

Financial obstacle. There were times when we could not conduct our desired activities because of lack of funding.

PLANS: What new engagements are planned by your organization in the short, medium and long term to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence?

Collaborate with other organizations in the conduct of trainings to be held in other Southeast Asian countries, instead of these just being held in the Philippines, where the SEA participants  from various countries come for the trainings. This will enlarge the base of peace educators per Southeast Asian country. This is contingent on funds of course.

GLOBAL MOVEMENT: How do you think the culture of peace and nonviolence could be strengthened and supported at the world level??

There  has to be financial support for the global groups that are already existing so that the efforts can continue, eg, the GCPE, GPPAC, PCI.
