PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the second half of the Decade?

The organisation Jeugd & Vrede has been working for decades and still works on these goals above. Every year the organisation keeps growing on volunteers. We keep working on these themes because it is necessary and I personally regret that it will stay necessary.

In 2005 the Belgian government suddenly had other priorities than working us these issues. The decade was better supported by the government from 2001-2005 than the second halfof this decade. Off course this didn’t stop us on working on a culture of peace and non-violence. But we can’t speak of a real progress.

OBSTACLES: Has your organization faced any obstacles to implementing the culture of peace and nonviolence? If so, what were they?

Less people know the Culture of Peace and nonviolence. They are not aware of the need to keep work on this culture.

PLANS: What new engagements are planned by your organization in the short, medium and long term to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence?

From February 1st till February 8th we will organise a trip to the headquarter of the UN in New York. Seven enthusiastic youth members who are willing to make a change in the world will make this trip. The general idea for this trip is to let the people of the UN know that we want this decade to continue. Why should we stop this international decade for a culture of peace and non-violence? A culture of peace and non-violence is a continuing process where everyone needs to work on.

However this Decade will end soon, it does not mean that we should stop working on this 8 points of actions mentioned in the declaration. On the contrary, we want to look at the results and find out what still has to be done.

With the new notice of the International Year of Youth we elaborated an idea to make the link between the International Decade and the International Year of Youth.

To show the world that youngsters want to live in a culture of peace and non-violence we want to start a worldwide project. We are convinced that with the use of the international photo-language, people can tell a lot. People all over the world will understand these images.

We want to give an example in New York of a compilation of Belgian photos that will visualize the idea for you. The photos will show that youngsters are asking the world to recognise the need to work on a peaceful and non-violence world. The photos will be images of children and youngsters who show their idea of a peaceful world. We want to bring the positive message that it is possible to choose to live peaceful together and that youngsters know that this is of the highest importance for their future and the next generations.

Our idea where we need the support of the UN for to make this initiative big enough and to spread it al over the world is this: we are convinced that if an agency or division of the UN can make and manage a website so people can upload there pictures, we will have a nice example of what influence children and youngsters can have on the leaders of the world.

GLOBAL MOVEMENT: How do you think the culture of peace and nonviolence could be strengthened and supported at the world level??

There are many small organisations who contribute to this peace decade, but who doesn’t have the possibilities to make big changes. They need the support of organisations who had a larger range and has more power such as the UN. If these small organisations get this support (mostly financial) it will make a bi different.

This idea that we have and that we want to be taken over by the UN to give it a worldwide power we hope to strengthen a peaceful and non-violent world
