PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the second half of the Decade?

We can see the progress done in our activities and within the groups we work with. On our experience it’s obvious that non-formal education in it diverse forms (exchanges between youth from diverse countries, thematic workshops, training courses, etc) have an impact in participants and they benefit from it. This way we can say that youth people and adults which participate in our activities feels the impact in diverse ways:
- increased awareness of reality and increased critical thinking
- new intercultural awareness and skills
- increased participation in society
- development of new values-attitudes (solidarity, social responsibility, respect for diversity, etc)
- increased awareness of human rights
- And others...

OBSTACLES: Has your organization faced any obstacles to implementing the culture of peace and nonviolence? If so, what were they?

The main obstacles we would like to describe are those of economical level. We have the feeling (is the reality also) that no one is interested to contribute to the work NGO are doing. It seems always a second importance thing. It is generally impossible to get co-funding for our projects but we are lucky that we can work with European Commission funds. We know other organisations have even more difficulties than us.

PLANS: What new engagements are planned by your organization in the short, medium and long term to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence?

CEIPES has in course an international project called “Culture of peace in youth people’s view” and we also plan to do other projects in the fields of culture of peace. We plan to send volunteers from Palermo to other countries in the world, we encourage volunteering inside our organisation, we plan to do a course about fight against poverty, we have just opened a centre for Human Rights Education (http://sites.google.com/a/ceipes.org/compas/) that foresees to spread HRE at local and regional level, and much more! We are very active and we work really hard in order to make things happen and to change society.

GLOBAL MOVEMENT: How do you think the culture of peace and nonviolence could be strengthened and supported at the world level??

We think there is a need for evident and direct support from the national governments and from the local authorities. This way we can broad the impact and make visible the need to change the culture we live in. It would be also necessary to facilitate training to NGO staff in order they can improve their competences and this way broaden the impact of their work. Finally we think schools are the perfect place to work on these issues so we think it should be developed a great campaign to make schools adhere and work with their students, also involving NGO to strengthen their fundamental role in the process. Also an international network to which all organisations, institutions and schools can adhere to show that we are a lot and to increase our capacity.
