ACTIONS: What activities have been undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the ten years of the Decade? If you already made a report in 2005, your information from 2005 will be included in the 2010 report.

The New Seminary for Interfaith Studies has, for many years more that just the second half of the Decade, been working toward a Culture of Peace based on understanding, knowledge and respect. We have chosen NOT to use the word "Tolerance" because it is our feeling that tolerance is not a truly positive attitude but one that is a bit arrogant.
In order for our students and graduates to really awaken to the concept of a Culture of Peace, we have been teaching about the religious traditions of most of the "major" faiths of the world along with the traditions and practices that define those faiths and their adherents. We feel that as one learns these things, it becomes easier to communicate in a heart centerd  spiritual way which removes mistrust and misunderstanding from the interchange between peoples of different geographical, ethnic, religious and spiritual paths. The aim of our educational program is to wipe away the misconceptions that lead to anger and confrontation.
In addition, the management, staff, students and graduates of The New Seminary for Interfaith Studies believe in the human rights of all peoples, regardless of age, color, gender, religion, nationality, sexual orientation, economic status, and mental or physicl ability.
We believe in service. As His Holines, the Dalai Lama said, "Religious people musr do more than offer prayers if the world is going to become a better place to live..."
And, so, service demands an active role, and the students and alumni are all working in as many capacities as they can find to promote a worldwide Culture of Peace.
Through our NGO's ECOSOC status at the UN, our students and graduates have been able to network with many of the organizations that are promoting the Culture of Peace around the world.
It is our vision that we will fulfill the promise found in all religions, and that is emphasized in the Millennium Goals of the United Nations...that everybody shall live in peace, free from want, free from fear with the freedom to live in dignity, and we know that all of those goals can oly be achieved and sustained in a Culture of Peace.

PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the second half of the Decade?

All of the personnel of The New Seminary for Interfaith Studies have experienced major breakthroughs in the work necessary to bring a Culture of Peace into worldwide reality. We have seen the establishment of Departments of Peace in various governments as well as the development of Campus Peace Centers in Universities and colleges around the world.
"Peace" has become a proactive concept and the Seminary is proud of its role in shifting the emphasis from "anti" anything to "pro" everything.
We intend to awaken the global consciousness toard a pro-peace mentality.

OBSTACLES: Has your organization faced any obstacles to implementing the culture of peace and nonviolence? If so, what were they?

We have not.
Because of our emphasis on cross cultural and cross religious education, the students and graduates of The New Seminary for Interfaith studies have learned how to meet a person or group of any origin where thy are, not where we wish them to be. Because of that, it has been easier to establish trust and then begin a dialogue that will add to the desire for and the acceptance of a Culture of Peace.
