PRIORITIES: All of the organization's domains of culture of peace activity

EDUCATION FOR PEACE
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
HUMAN RIGHTS

TOP PRIORITY: The organization's most important culture of peace activity

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

PARTNERSHIPS AND NETWORKS: What partnerships and networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the global movement for a culture of peace?

Peace by Piece works with War Kids Relief, a group that aids children that affected by the war in the Middle East.

ACTIONS: What activities have been undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the ten years of the Decade? If you already made a report in 2005, your information from 2005 will be included in the 2010 report.

Youth in Northfield, Minnesota join together in a powerful force to learn about the situation of children in the Middle East. Far too often, we turn our heads to the horrors of war and ignore what is going on. The children are forgotten. We cannot let them be left behind, for it is not their choice that the war is in their backyards. Youth make bracelets that are sold in Northfield to raise money for the children. More specifically, the money raised goes to help an Afghani man or woman start a small business in refugee camps. Through this, they are able to educate other refugees and give them opportunities to work. As a result they are able to provide a more stable and healthy environment for their children, and eventually, get to a life outside of the refugee camp.

PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the second half of the Decade?

With Peace by Piece Campaign, the issues that Middle Eastern children face are brought to the attention of American youth. We forget about the children that are affected by war and get too involved with politics. This organization forces youth to realize that it is our duty to promote peace and help those that need our help, regardless or political stance. In the end, it all comes down to the fact that we are all people.

OBSTACLES: Has your organization faced any obstacles to implementing the culture of peace and nonviolence? If so, what were they?

The children of war are so often forgotten. Bringing this issue to the attention of youth was a challenge only because it is an uncomfortable topic and much easier to turn your head away and ignore the topic. Ignorance is so powerful. However, with Peace by Piece Campaign, we have been able to turn this ignorance into positive energy towards promoting peace and aiding the youth of the Middle East. Secondly, lack of resources proved to be a huge roadblock in getting this organization moving. Thanks to a grant for Northfield’s Healthy Community Initiative, this project was able to get underway to make positive, peaceful change.

PLANS: What new engagements are planned by your organization in the short, medium and long term to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence?

We will continue to host bracelet making sessions to educate local youth. With their help, we hope to raise over $2500 to aid an Afghani refugee in starting their own business to promote a growing and evolving economy.

GLOBAL MOVEMENT: How do you think the culture of peace and nonviolence could be strengthened and supported at the world level??

Youth need to be involved, as we are the steppingstones towards tomorrow. If we educate and make it known the huge impact that ANYBODY can have, peace will be strengthened. Teaching tolerance is also extremely important. Without the belief that all are created equal, no matter their situation, the movement towards world peace and nonviolence will be a slow, tedious process.
