ACTIONS: What activities have been undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the ten years of the Decade? If you already made a report in 2005, your information from 2005 will be included in the 2010 report.

The Community Action Center with a mission to promote a healthy, caring and just community for all people through advocacy, resources and incomes up to 200% of the Federal poverty guideline.

CAC is a provider of basic needs, coordinating, coopoerating with many community partners some of whom have been identified above.

CAC strives to mitigate the impact of poverty while improving policy and hope for those struggling in poverty.

PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the second half of the Decade?

CAC provides food progams, housing and homeless services,  clothing, information and medical service referral currently for about 1,000 households in the region.  Most are employed/underemployed; many have suffered loss due to the downturned economy.

CAC has focused most recently on launching permanent supportive housing, a dental care access program for children and employment training programs, entrepreneurial training and support and new models of food distribution.  A recent attempt to train and support computer literacy and internet access is gaining momentum.

OBSTACLES: Has your organization faced any obstacles to implementing the culture of peace and nonviolence? If so, what were they?

Immigration policy is not clear and fails us all.  Continued discrimination is a derivative.  Many of our clients face racial/cultural discrimination in some subtle and not-so-subtle ways.

Others face economic discrimination and lack of access to opportunity.

Access to information via internet is prohibitively expensive, yet would open a new world of opportunity to those who face that as a barrier.

PLANS: What new engagements are planned by your organization in the short, medium and long term to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence?

With added resources, CAC would go deeper into the economic development work with an emphasis small scale agri-preneur/ entrepreneurial support, more employment training and job development.

GLOBAL MOVEMENT: How do you think the culture of peace and nonviolence could be strengthened and supported at the world level??
