ACTIONS: What activities have been undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the ten years of the Decade? If you already made a report in 2005, your information from 2005 will be included in the 2010 report.

2009:

Assisi: An estimated 3000 people attended the 14th International Peace Festival, a 7 day event, which promoted Peace, International Cooperation and Ecology through seminars, art and concerts, the native land of Saint Francis and the city symbol of brotherhood.

Milano: Theater program and discussion panel on Peace in the family as a building block for peace in the community, school and regional level - at the Universal Peace Federation hall.

Monza: People of various faiths and nationalities, including politicians and civil society leaders attended an evening event which included a special toast for Peace and an intercultural gathering of cultural songs and dances and a vigil at Monza City Hall with prayers, readings and torch lighting for Peace. At Teatro Binario, famous Italian actors performed to raise funds for Tibetan and Burmese refugees.

Ragusa: Day of meditation, prayers and education on Peace at the Mauna Center.

Roma: Religious, political and civil society backgrounds attended a meeting of Peace messages and songs at the evangelical church sponsored by the Interreligious Table of the Municipio VIII of Rome.

2007:

Community of Living Ethics in Città della Pieve met as a group to align and meditate on the world event, International Day of Peace.

Maunacenter in Ragusa, Sicily, had meditation, prayer, silence, and in depth analyses in three days of meetings, from September 21st through the 23rd, for the purpose of peace on earth.

Mongolfiera Bari Japigia Shopping Center A privately organized annual “Make Peace” event was held to educate citizens on the problems relating to peace. The shopping center square was named “Peace Square” by popular vote.

Tent for Silence erected a Tent for Silence in a square in Milan, a space for all who chose to stop to stand silently alongside of each other. The theme underlying the Tent and other inter-religious initiatives was the “Challenge of Hospitality”.

United Artists for Peace hosted an International Peace Festival from the 15th to the 23rd of September in Assisi. A seminar on “Peace, Human Rights and International Dialogue” and an “Extraordinary Concert for Peace” were held on the International Day of Peace to honor the occasion in the Basilica of St. Francis.

Universal Peace Federation of Rome in coordination with other groups hosted a cultural days of peace event with dancers, singers, designers, and peace poetry. An art event was also a part of the occasion.*

2005:

United Religions Initiative (URI) In Assisi, a 24 hour Peace vigil was observed, beginning at midnight September 20. Two seminars, one on “The Role of Religions in Peacebuilding” and one on “The Role of Religions in Conflict Zones” took place over 2 days.

PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the second half of the Decade?

On a global level, reported events for the International Day of Peace continue to grow year after year (see the website listed above):

In the 2005 Report, 155 Peace Day events in 47 countries are presented.

The 2007 records show that:
* We had 623 commitments across the world
* 70 countries
* 225 cities (outside of the USA)
* 42 US states
* An estimate of nearly 500,000 participants
* An average of 500 people per event

2009 annual report listed 700+ events
