ACTIONS: What activities have been undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the ten years of the Decade? If you already made a report in 2005, your information from 2005 will be included in the 2010 report.

-Community Peace building

Creation of a formal stable structure for collectively identifying, analyzing and resolving problems by stakeholders. Through the facilitation of periodic forums between stakeholders in the host communities, Oil industry and security personnel. The aim is to strengthen the channels of communication and encourage joint problem solving.

Security and Peace Education Project (SEPEP)
Security and Peace Education is a short but intensive training that  adopts an interactive/participatory methodology to develop participants’ attitude for respect of human rights, sensitivity to local sensibilities, conflict sensitivity in the discharge of their duties, observance organization’s health and safety environment, (HSE) standards, awareness of the voluntary principles on security and human rights (VPSHR), best practices in security provisioning in volatile area and in general promotion of public safety and security.  The audience are security officials working with extractive companies or deployed to provide security to their installations. The training equips them with skills and expertise needed for engaging community members. Engaging community members in a manner that would reduce tension and reprisal attacks would promote community cooperation and partnerships.

PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the second half of the Decade?

- Improved communication and cordial relationship between host communities and oil companies / extractive industries
Progressively, we have been able to achieve the following through our intervention programs in the Conflict in Niger Delta.
- Improved cooperation and partnership between security officials and their host communities in the discharge of the duties;

- Reduction in conflict and violence between the extractive industry and their host communities;

- Reduced production loss as a result of shut downs and disturbances

- Reduced loss of life of security personnel in the line of duty.
-And improved co-operation and partnership  between and within communities in the project states (Bayelsa and Rivers States)

OBSTACLES: Has your organization faced any obstacles to implementing the culture of peace and nonviolence? If so, what were they?

Security forces do not see why they should be engaged in non-violence because they take law enforcement to mean "violent force"

Difficulty in sustaining peace and peace programs as a result of the  paradox of security where national security makes nationals insecure, for example in post conflict communities in the Niger Delta contact between security forces and community members are characterized by anxiety.

PLANS: What new engagements are planned by your organization in the short, medium and long term to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence?

GLOBAL MOVEMENT: How do you think the culture of peace and nonviolence could be strengthened and supported at the world level??
