PARTNERSHIPS AND NETWORKS: What partnerships and networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the global movement for a culture of peace?

Training through and with the Anti Defamation League’s World of Difference program for Educators in anti bullying behaviors for schools seeking to create zero tolerance for violence, the Center for Teaching Peace providing training through grants for high school students prone to violence to offer them other alternatives, healing racism through study circles with the Center for Religious Tolerance in Sarasota, FL., which is also a cooperation circle with the United Religions Initiative in California where we do interactive workshops with women from all different religious backgrounds to learn from one another.  Teaching courses in conflict resolution through the Academy of Lifelong Learning in Sarasota, FL. at the University of S. Florida, ; providing workshops through the Peace Alliance in Sarasota, FL. and a consultant to the school board of Sarasota County, Florida in violence prevention.  Also provide training in addictionology and how overcoming addictions also adds to creating a culture of peace.  Providing weekly meditations and inspirational talks and monthly seminars in practical application of spiritual principles to create a world that works for all at Unity in Brandon, Florida, a spiritual center.

ACTIONS: What activities have been undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the ten years of the Decade? If you already made a report in 2005, your information from 2005 will be included in the 2010 report.

Please see my websites for www.DrDeri.com or www.unityinbrandon.org which outline workshops, talks, articles, seminars, projects etc. which have been undertaken by my organization to promote a culture of peace.  Specifically, my work in Belize at Galen University teaching Conflict Resolution through Rotary International to Belizean university and high school students and providing different projects whereby they changed the culture of their community in San Ignacio, Belize through awareness of 12 step programs in recovery, programs about domestic violence, goodwill projects on earth day in cleaning up their environment and not burning garbage or littering on their dirt road highways from public busses.  Another project was working with high school students from Sacred Heart College in San Ignacio and teaching them about film making whereby they created a 5 minute DVD entitled Trust is a Two Way Street based on their life stories.

PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the second half of the Decade?

Yes, observable changes in the population we work with would suggest there exists now an understanding of what is meant by a culture of peace.  Especially noteworthy are the increased amounts of programs being taught in the public schools relating to a culture of peace by empowering youth to make a difference about things they are concerned with.

OBSTACLES: Has your organization faced any obstacles to implementing the culture of peace and nonviolence? If so, what were they?

The observable obstacles are for example local colleges and universities not offering courses in peace studies and not being open to it as well.  Funding has been an issue as well for some projects although we got a small grant from the Center for Teaching Tolerance and a renewed grant from the state of Florida for continued work with ESE students at Sarasota High School to become cultural ambassadors; provided an all day training with partial grant money to 35 educators in Sarasota on non violence and anti bullying behaviors in the schools.

PLANS: What new engagements are planned by your organization in the short, medium and long term to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence?

We are in the process of applying to other non profit organizations for ongoing work with the schools here to replicate the process of the study circles in healing racism in other schools.

GLOBAL MOVEMENT: How do you think the culture of peace and nonviolence could be strengthened and supported at the world level??

I think the process is one of each one teach one; meaning that one way the culture of peace could be strengthened and supported at the world level is through the local level.  Then, through the internet and ongoing communications we could learn from one another.  However, what I think is really crucial is for all of the news casters and news stations to start reporting good news and what works versus all of the negative news.  People need to have hope and believe in good will.  Also, very important to educate terrorist organizations and religious fanatics who believe in ill will on this concept of a culture of peace, thought not yet clear on how to do this!
