TOP PRIORITY: The organization's most important culture of peace activity

EDUCATION FOR PEACE

PARTNERSHIPS AND NETWORKS: What partnerships and networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the global movement for a culture of peace?

We partner with all United Nations Programmes and other national or international organizations that promote peace and development around the world. Also, local and international organizations (NGOs) programmes that foster the promotion, protection and advancement of peace and human right in Nigeria and the globe.

ACTIONS: What activities have been undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the ten years of the Decade? If you already made a report in 2005, your information from 2005 will be included in the 2010 report.

Education and training for School Pupils: Pupils were be taught conflict resolution and respect for human rights in both the primary and secondary schools and homes across Nigeria. Stakeholders in the educational sector including the 36 states ministries of education were invited to introduce education for a culture of peace and nonviolence
into school curricula at all educational levels. Violence in schools such as bullying and violence against girls were examined and recommendations made. Also, decision against the use of violent language by teachers and pupils.

Ensure equality between men and women through equal participation of women in
economic, social and political decision-making, elimination of all forms of discrimination and violence against women, support and assistance to women in need. The IPF believes that the empowerment of the women through active non-violence promotes equality and encourages women and girls to become more involved in peace building. We believe that
without peace, development is impossible – and without women, neither peace nor
development can take place. These among several other campaigns and advocacy are being pursued.

PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the second half of the Decade?

Yes, there has been a tremendous progress towards promoting nonviolence as a mean to an end; particularly in the violence-prone Niger-Delta areas of Nigeria. Also, positive dimension to the understanding and culture of religious and ethnic tolerance in Nigeria.

OBSTACLES: Has your organization faced any obstacles to implementing the culture of peace and nonviolence? If so, what were they?

The major challenge as usual is finance; which limits the extent of outreach. We have the problem of security; i.e. the inability of the government to provide security for the protection of lives and properties in general and that of the minorities groups in particular. Also, the cultural belief of a particular set people has stalled the extent of our progress. However, we have made giant progress over time.

PLANS: What new engagements are planned by your organization in the short, medium and long term to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence?

Icon Philanthropic Foundation (IPF) has planned for the short term, the direct intervention in conflict areas using the indigenous resources like the priests, tradition practice, culture and royal personalities to stabilize the environment. The medium and long term engagement of IPF is using the tools of campaigns and advocacy and most importantly addressing the inherent injustices that fuel violent and conflict.

GLOBAL MOVEMENT: How do you think the culture of peace and nonviolence could be strengthened and supported at the world level??

Regular assembling of peace and nonviolence promoters all over the world should be intensified. This allows the exchange of experience and ideas and adoption of common front on peace and nonviolent. Further strengthening of the Non State Actors (NGOs) to increase the strategic initiatives, projects, campaigns and dialogue on peace and nonviolence.
