EDUCATION FOR PEACE

PARTNERSHIPS AND NETWORKS: What partnerships and networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the global movement for a culture of peace?

To begin with, to introduce a 60 hour curriculum on educating various groups on peace and resolving conflicts, with School of Professional and Continuing Education (HKU SPACE) - the continuing education arm of The University of Hong Kong. Program aim to deliver peace messages in their local work environment, schools, community and families.

ACTIONS: What activities have been undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the ten years of the Decade? If you already made a report in 2005, your information from 2005 will be included in the 2010 report.

1. The Foundation has established a working partnership with the United Nations in China  and  has  inaugurated an annual ceremony to celebrate the UN International Day of Peace in Hong  Kong.

2. Recently, the Foundation has been invited to participate  the 2010 International Day of Peace Town Hall Meeting at the UN Headquarters, New York

• The first Peace Day was held at Hong Kong University on 21September 2008,  with  Rotary  International  District 3450. H.E. Mr. Khalid Malik, UN Resident Coordinator in China  officiated the celebration ceremony.

• The second Peace Day was held at Cyberport on 20 September 2009, followed by a  successful 4  hours  Gandhi Peace Concert.  Mr. Abhimanyu Singh, Director of UNESCO and Representative in Beijing officiated the ceremony and also delivered a keynote speech informing the people of Hong Kong, the UNESCO’s call for 2010 to be the International Year of Rapprochement of Cultures.

The Foundation organsied and invited a large gathering of peace supporters, ordinary citizens attending and walking through  the public arena, participating, singing and enjoying the Peace day celebration through a whole-day programme. It was an event packed with music and performances that featured the message of peace. The event received support from people of different ages and backgrounds. The Peace Day event opened with Yoga for Peace and followed by Paint for Peace by young children in the morning.

The Peace Day Ceremony started with St. Andrew’s Pipe Band escorting the guest speakers onto the stage, followed by unveiling of the Peace Pole, Observance of One Minute Silence, Ringing the Peace Bell, and an International Fag Parade by Kindergarten children after Mrs. Singh raised the UN Flagg.

Video message from Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon was shown. Indian Consul General in Hong Kong, Mr. L.D. Ralte gave an introduction of Gandhi’s work towards peace. Other guest speakers included Sir David Akers-Jones, Hon. President of PIF, Senator Ken Wong , National President of JCIHK, and Mr. Michael Wong, PIF Peace Ambassador. To end the Ceremony, Tharangini in Hong Kong performed the song “Peace Within’ especially created for this occasion by the composer Jairam Parameswaran.

The Gandhi Peace Concert then proceeded with a series of performances featuring the theme of peace. Celebrity singer Michael Wong and others through their music convey messages of peace to the public. Gandhi was brought live by a manned statue during the song sequence that  moved the crowd watching and feeling the warm messages. Booklets were distributed.  The event came to a climax when  volunteers from the Youth Committee and audiences joined , Michael and the  students in the song ’We Are the World’ on stage, – a tribute to Michael Jackson., and urging people to start giving and be mindful of those who are suffering..

PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the second half of the Decade?

Not yet, as this happened for a year only.  We are beginning to see the light in acceptance of peace promotions and activities.

OBSTACLES: Has your organization faced any obstacles to implementing the culture of peace and nonviolence? If so, what were they?

In general, the subject of peace is new to the people of Hong Kong, especially with ‘peace education' which require huge efforts to be effective.  As a start-up, normally manpower and financial support are the constraints.

PLANS: What new engagements are planned by your organization in the short, medium and long term to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence?

Launch The Peace Club in May, The Peace Centre  to train volunteers, to educate children on non-bullying behavior and stop family violence at year end, and the annual Hong Kong Peace Festival this Sept.  Also intensive fund raising. promotions. All are on-going projects.

GLOBAL MOVEMENT: How do you think the culture of peace and nonviolence could be strengthened and supported at the world level??

1. To address and promote the subject in different segments of the community . 2. To from a united front /international platform by the region, with other peace builders, especially NGOs to work with combined  effort., e.g. The Peace Club and Young Peace Club we are launching, which offers members collective influence and experience to support peace building, help address major causes of human suffering and promote the shared interests of humanity..
