EDUCATION FOR PEACE

PARTNERSHIPS AND NETWORKS: What partnerships and networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the global movement for a culture of peace?

We participate with Divison 48 Peace Psychology, Task Force on Peace and Spirituality and with the Division of Humanistic Psychology to create programs and ventures involving the education on values that promote peace and activities which engender awareness and participation in the promotion of values which engender and create peace In addition, we work with internation advisory teams to engage in crisis intervention activiites for people devastated by environmental disasters..

ACTIONS: What activities have been undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the ten years of the Decade? If you already made a report in 2005, your information from 2005 will be included in the 2010 report.

By partnering with the Task Force on Peace and Spirituality in Division 48 and with various participants engaged in the peacebuilding components of  humanistic psychology the Internation Association has generated and participated in over 2 dozen conferences and more than 60 programs educating professionals and students regarding the values and projects that promote peace.  These programs or projects include creating curriculla for various religious Sunday school programs utilizing the various Holy Books (from each religion) which cite segments of the Works that promote peace between the various faiths.  Another project includes creating operational programs to educate homeless children in context of helping agencies so as to facilitate integration into the oscieties from which they come.  Another aspect of our work is to promote the utilization of peace building measures to tap into various subject populations to determine factors involved in peacebuilding within different populations.  Other such measures were utilized in determining coping strategies that fostered peace in individuals and groups post 9/11.  Still other projects include crisis intervention on behalf of peoples who suffered from natural disasters such as the Haitian population.  The intervention includes working with other organizations that are creating opportunites for green technology to set up jobs and help for the Haitian populace.  One other project includes the publication of resources and articles and books regarding these issues especially for the purpose of promoting values and activites that build peace.  One such book was recently published and will appear on Amazon.com called Visions in Conflict.

The Women's Sacred Circles, created by Michelle J. Handwerker PhD, CAAT, LMT engages women in authentic circle work to inform, and promote values that promote peace and intragroup and intergroup harmony.  The Short and Middle Range Plan is to expand the range of audiences served both within the local and national communities.  Now serving South Florida and Up state New York she is expanding her efforts through web site and media promotions.

The International Association for the Advancement of Human Welfare, Inc in consort with an international crisis intervention advisory team are coordinating and orchestrating a green technology and humanitarian effort on behalf of those suffering the economic and environmental devastations on the island country of Haiti.  The purpose of this long range project is not only to evolve a consistent relief effort  but to establish a sustainable society via the generation of green jobs, green technology interventions and humanitarian relief efforts.  Each aspect will be coordinated within the community culture an healing processes.  In addition, there will be a conference in June of 2011 in Hawaii to facilitate the consolidation of these efforts and the gathering of these inputs.  The input sources will be from industry ( green technology), humanitarian NGO's and professional organizations and associations, and from professionals who are aligned with this work.  From this effort we will generate a paradigm of service to be applied to other environmentally or economically devastated areas world wide.  We welcome any and all feedback and interest in our endeavors.

PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the second half of the Decade?

YES!  In each of the various projects, including program presentations at conferences; crisis interventions; publications; and work to create networks for the homeless we have seen definite signs of engagement  progress.

OBSTACLES: Has your organization faced any obstacles to implementing the culture of peace and nonviolence? If so, what were they?

The most significant obstacles occur in the venue of working to help the homeless and create opportunities to engage and utilize the created peacebuilding tools for integrating these populations.  GOs are resistant to these possibilities and NGOs often do not have the funding to support them.

PLANS: What new engagements are planned by your organization in the short, medium and long term to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence?

Short and Medium  Term Plans:  Focus energies in venues that show most promise, including educational opportunites for professionals and students; continue to network and create alliances with green organizations to engage crisis intervention strategies for those in need of support on an international and national level.  Long Term Plans include the continuation of submissions to professional venues, including conferences and panels for presenting projects and values that promote peace. In addition, continuing to build networks with green organizations and technologies in order to allow for opportunites for various geographic regions to benefit from these green technologies as well as fostering connections with other international helping agencies offering survival resources for those in desperate need. Exploring other possibilites not previously considered, for the benefit of the homeless is another long range plan.

GLOBAL MOVEMENT: How do you think the culture of peace and nonviolence could be strengthened and supported at the world level??

Networking venues and conferences allowing for constituent participation at least three times in each decade so that the movement toward global peace can be strengthened.  Much advance notice with diverse member input would add toi the potential success of such a venture.  The International Association would volunteer to contribute toward the creation of such a venture..ie participate at these conferences, and network with other participants toward this end.
