EDUCATION FOR PEACE

PARTNERSHIPS AND NETWORKS: What partnerships and networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the global movement for a culture of peace?

Pathways To Peace (PTP) has Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council, and works with the U.N. Centre for Human Rights, U.N. Centre for Human Settlements, UNESCO, UNICEF, and other Agencies.   PTP serves as International Secretariat of the Culture of Peace Initiative (CPI), with over 4000 Participating organizations and individuals worldwide who receive our e-newsletter.  CPI is dedicated to building an intergenerational and intercultural movement for a culture of Peace for future generations.

ACTIONS: What activities have been undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the ten years of the Decade? If you already made a report in 2005, your information from 2005 will be included in the 2010 report.

Each year, PTP submits a comprehensive report to the UN, documenting the annual growth of Peace Day and a global culture of Peace.

In 2008, we completed two new websites, one the International Day of Peace and one for the Culture of Peace Initiative.  The sites feature a global, year-round calendar of Peace events:
http://www.internationaldayofpeace.org
http://www.cultureofpeace.org (features an online Peace community)

More  Projects:

Our Peace Day Calendar program has led to numerous partnerships and "Peace Day" marked on millions of calendars around the world!

"The Joan Kenley" show is dedicated to sustainability, co-creating health, and inspiring listeners with conversations ranging from the personal to the global.

Peace Building Through Business - Our mission is: To inspire the practice of sustainable Peace as a natural expression of business in the 21st century.

We also take part in UN conferences and take part in Peace Day planning meetings with peacebuilding partners at the UN.  (see http://pathwaystopeace.org/archive.html)

PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the second half of the Decade?

Each year, more events are documented in our report and there is a growing adoption of Internet tools, media and newsletters, all of which help put the spotlight on the International Day of Peace. This strengthens awareness for communities around the world who celebrate Peace Day and nurtures a year-round culture of peace.  We've documented significant highlights of Peace Day events and organizations, many of whom have been heavily involved with Peace Day in the last few years on the International Day of Peace website:  www.internationaldayofpeace.org

OBSTACLES: Has your organization faced any obstacles to implementing the culture of peace and nonviolence? If so, what were they?

There is a lack of understanding of what constitutes a "culture of peace", which we promote, and explaining the many pathways to peace (which we highlight through our Peace Wheel).  There is also a need to bring attention to the strong relationship between these diverse pathways to peace and everyday acts, which are the foundation for a culture of peace.  Consistent funding is an ongoing challenge.

PLANS: What new engagements are planned by your organization in the short, medium and long term to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence?

GLOBAL MOVEMENT: How do you think the culture of peace and nonviolence could be strengthened and supported at the world level??

The United Nations Millenium goals could greatly expand participation of each of the campaigns "eight sectors", which will lead to a more measured awareness to building a culture of peace.  Through the coordinated efforts of the Millenium goals campaign, UNESCO and the Culture of Peace Initiative (www.cultureofpeace.org), there can be more UN NGOs and civil society organizations to carry forward and implement the commitments for a Culture of Peace and Nonviolence.   Social media, which much of the world's youth are engaged with, could be more greatly utilized as an educational and organizing tool
