Unnati Features has spent the past five years working towards eliminating child labour and ensuring that the children regain their lost childhood.  It has worked with the International Labour Organisation on communication strategies, studying and evaluating efforts that were put in under the INDUS project in 21 selected Indian districts.

Last year Unnati Features worked on reaching out to young Indians sensitising them to the Millennium Development Goals and the progress India has made in reaching the goals.

PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the second half of the Decade?

In October 2006, the Government of India through a notification prohibited employment of children below 14 years as domestic workers and in dhabas, hotels and other recreation centres. There is some awareness of this in cities and large towns as the move was covered by the mass media. Some states even came up with action plans to ensure that no child under 14 was made to work.

2009 saw the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act that provides for free and compulsory education to all children between 6 to 14 years. Also,  25 per cent of seats in every private school to be allocated for children from disadvantaged groups including diffirently abled children. But it will be a long time before this becomes a reality. The condition and teaching standards in our village schools leave a lot to be desired. Millions of Indians face absolute grinding poverty. Living in the cities, the privileged Indian does not get to see it.

OBSTACLES: Has your organization faced any obstacles to implementing the culture of peace and nonviolence? If so, what were they?

The general public still feels that by giving a job to a poor child, they are doing him/her a big favour. It is this thinking that is has been a big obstacle in the elimination of child labour. We have to work harder at ensuring that people, especially the young, realise that by   giving a job to the child they are not doing the child a favour but condemning him/her to a life of poverty and servitude and stunted physical and mental growth. The parents too have to also realise that education is the right of each child and they must send him to school. The lack of realisation among the employers and the parents are also among the obstacles in ensuring a world where all children go to school and realise their full human potential.

As far as meeting the MDGs is concerned among the factors that come in way of India realising them are the lack of political will,  corruption and the people not knowing about their basic rights.

PLANS: What new engagements are planned by your organization in the short, medium and long term to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence?

Continue to work for basic human rights for all Indians. As my field is communications, all these issues will be linked to that in some form or the other.

GLOBAL MOVEMENT: How do you think the culture of peace and nonviolence could be strengthened and supported at the world level??
