EDUCATION FOR PEACE

TOP PRIORITY: The organization's most important culture of peace activity

EDUCATION FOR PEACE

PARTNERSHIPS AND NETWORKS: What partnerships and networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the global movement for a culture of peace?

Eugene City of Peace

ACTIONS: What activities have been undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the ten years of the Decade? If you already made a report in 2005, your information from 2005 will be included in the 2010 report.

To inspire others to work for peace we have two programs focusing on the achievements of the American winners of the Nobel Peace Prize and what they have done for world peace.

Program One:  The Nobel Peace Laureate Project has created the first ever education program about the 24 American winners of the Nobel Peace Prize.  These lesson plans and reference materials have been written for the elementary, middle school, and high school levels respectively by experienced classroom teachers.  These materials are available for a suggested donation to students and teachers anywhere.
In the last nine months of 2009 over 6300 lesson plans were downloaded from our website.  The website received nearly 72,000 inquiries from all the states in the union and over 30 foreign countries including: 600 from Australia; 500 from Russia; and even one from Nepal!  Inquiries also came from the U. S. government, including 89 from the Department of Defense.
Education is vital.  Most  Americans can name five American generals, but few can do the same for the nation's internationally recognized peacemakers.
Program Two:  At present the Nobel Project is seeking to raise funds and receive in-kind donations to create a Peace Park that will be the first ever to honor as a group the 24 American Peace Laureates.  The city of Eugene, Oregon, has allocated a 2+ acre site in a city park for this purpose.  A design for the park was selected as the result of a national competition.
The Peace Park features a winding Peace Path, and a serpentine Wall of Peace.   Along the Peace Path will be placed tall pillars, each of which displaying two plaques honoring a pair of Peace Laureates.   A space in the center has been
allocated for contemplation and can double as a meeting place for a school field trip. 45 new trees and 1800 new plants will turn the space into a gorgeous peace garden.
At present we are seeking contributions to bring this project to life.  The Americans to be honored have saved millions of lives, settled wars, prevented others, and have aided the victims of war and violence.  They deserve recogniton by their countrymen.  For details on how you can help visit our website:  www.nobelpeacelaureates.org

PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the second half of the Decade?

We have completed our educational materials program.  What we now need are contributions to help create the Peace Park.

OBSTACLES: Has your organization faced any obstacles to implementing the culture of peace and nonviolence? If so, what were they?

As a brand new nonprofit organzation we lack a tradition of giving that is part of the culture of United Way, the Red Cross, and other established nonprofit organizations.   The decline in the world economy has reduced donations to nonprofits and the Nobel Project is no exception.

PLANS: What new engagements are planned by your organization in the short, medium and long term to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence?

GLOBAL MOVEMENT: How do you think the culture of peace and nonviolence could be strengthened and supported at the world level??
