PARTNERSHIPS AND NETWORKS: What partnerships and networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the global movement for a culture of peace?

Platform voor een cultuur van vrede en geweldloosheid
People building Peace
University Utrecht; Summer school
Stichting Leerstoelen Vredesopbouw
Participating in the founding of a assessment foundation where we hope to concentrate knowledge and best practises about peace education.

ACTIONS: What activities have been undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the ten years of the Decade? If you already made a report in 2005, your information from 2005 will be included in the 2010 report.

We publish three times a year our periodical, which contains articles (theoretical and practical) about peace education and child rearing. Thes articles are found on our website too.
We participate in activities organized by other foundations concerning peace education.
We participate in the Summer school of the University of Utrecht. The overall aim of our contribution at the Summer school is to offer an introduction and a contribution to education for peace, human rights and justice.
Our chairman is hon. professor at the university Utrecht where he teaches students about peace education and human rights.

PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the second half of the Decade?

Not enough!! We lost our Chair at the university, although our professor still teaches peace education. Our governement has not paid much attention to this decade and we have not been able to change that. Still, there is a growing interest in peace education. Schools pay more attention to peace education than before 2000. Many peace building strategies and competencies have been developed these last 5 years to contribute to cultures of peace. Our participation in the Summer school (University of Utrecht) offers an introduction to education for peace, human rights and justice to participating students from all over the world.

OBSTACLES: Has your organization faced any obstacles to implementing the culture of peace and nonviolence? If so, what were they?

Governement is not very interested, sothat fund rising for the continuation of the Chair on peace education was not succesfull.
People are less interested in theoretical knowledge than in best practices. This implicates that there is less money for theoretical research. Other countries have far more asked our professor to give a lecture than Dutch organisations.

PLANS: What new engagements are planned by your organization in the short, medium and long term to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence?

We participate in the founding of an assessment foundation where all knowledge, theoretical and best practices on peace education can be found by schools and other intereseted parties.

GLOBAL MOVEMENT: How do you think the culture of peace and nonviolence could be strengthened and supported at the world level??

NGO's and governements should stimulate peace education, and conflict management at schools, they should stimulate educational programs on television and drive back violent child programs on television. Sport clubs should pay more attention to peace education. Stimulate research on behaviour that contributes to cultures of peace. Stimulate that young people grow up with joyful perspectives for a future in peace and justice. See to it that not economical aims prevail but social aims, and that multinationals do not take over the existing governement. Global movement on peace should be strenghtend on such a level that decisions on starting war can no longer be taken by a powerful country on its own, or without much support from other countries. People who have succesfully established peace (or the beginning of some form of peace) in very unstable countries should be given far more voice. And the voice of peace and justice shoudl be prevailing above other voices in the UN. Maybe the decade for a culture of peace and non violence for the children of the world should be continued for another 10 years. And now with much more pressure on governments to implementation of a culture of peace.
