ACTIONS: What activities have been undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the ten years of the Decade? If you already made a report in 2005, your information from 2005 will be included in the 2010 report.

2009

“Attersee Friedenfest” included Peace messages, workshops, poetry, music and lights for Peace
around the lake. A small group at Yoga Kula participated in “Yoga Mala for Peace” project.

2007

Austrian Network for Peace and Nonviolence in Salzburg organized a ceremony with the City Mayor, a painting exchange with African artists, drumming at the Peace pole, and a candle lighting/flag ceremony and peace dance with interreligious representatives and NGOs.

International Sri Deep Madavananda Ashram held a planting of a Peace Tree in a Vienna Park in cooperation with the magistrat of Vienna district. Afterwards representatives of different religions came to the Peace Tree to share an Inter-religious World-Peace Prayer.

World Peace Prayer Society (WPPS) – Peace Day ceremony in Salzburg.

Yoga in Daily Life celebrated Peace Day with an awareness event in Villach. Members lit peace candles from noon till five in the evening on the main place of the village.

2005

World Peace Prayer Society (WPPS) A flag ceremony was held in St. Elisabeth Catholic Church in Salzburg. Cardboard flags were placed on the floor of the church, in the shape of a mandala. 70-80 people participated in the ceremony, which was open to the public. A Peace pole was donated to the City of Salzburg, and the city’s Mayor assured organizers it would find a good spot in the center of Salzburg. The evening’s program included a literature reading by handicapped people and presentations by refugees from Afghanistan and Africa. Participants danced Israeli dances around the flag mandala, and olive oil and herbs from Palestine were sold to support Palestinian farmers.

On a global level, reported events for the International Day of Peace continue to grow year after year (see the website listed above):

In the 2005 Report, 155 Peace Day events in 47 countries are presented.

The 2007 records show that:
* We had 623 commitments across the world
* 70 countries
* 225 cities (outside of the USA)
* 42 US states
* An estimate of nearly 500,000 participants
* An average of 500 people per event

2009 annual report listed 700+ events
