The foundation of a University center for peace education, founded in 2005, is a progress as such. From now on, it is possible to work systematically and with a long-term perspective, even with very limited means. Our main achievements are: - A two-year University course “Human rights and peace education in Europe”(in-service training) including teachers from all parts of Europe (also outside of the EU), 2004-2006. - A network of peace educators from Germany, Switzerland, Luxemburg and Austria (German speaking countries), established in 2006. - First attempts to establish a “human rights at universities” in Austria, in order to establish a culture of human rights research and teaching at all Austrian universities. In 2009. - Regular (yearly) a peace education day, in cooperation with the school authorities in our region (Carinthia), including practitioners and academic peace educators - A strong cooperation with peace education centers and personalities in the neighbor countries Italy and Slovenia, regular exchanges, common projects. - A “Yearbook for a Culture of Peace”, edited by the Center, since 2006. Thematic Issues, so far: Culture and Peace, Dialogue of Civilizations, International Hot Spots and Conflicts, Human Rights, and: Balance of the Decade of a Culture of Peace (for 2010). - A couple of other scholarly publications (books, articles) on peace and human rights education, in German, but also in English, Italian and Slovene.

PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the second half of the Decade? |
More professionalism in peace education: experiences with many more practical challenges and various fields of peace education, a culture of (also academic) discussion on peace and human rights education.

OBSTACLES: Has your organization faced any obstacles to implementing the culture of peace and nonviolence? If so, what were they?

In Austria, there is very little understanding for the necessity to provide systematic research and sustainable efforts for peace education. Thus, our Center is financially and organizationally very poor
