PARTNERSHIPS AND NETWORKS: What partnerships and networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the global movement for a culture of peace?
European Movement Belgium Young European Federalists European Youth Forum
ACTIONS: What activities have been undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the ten years of the Decade? If you already made a report in 2005, your information from 2005 will be included in the 2010 report.
JEF Belgium has just been recently very active, but always promoting cooperation, mainly on a European level. We refer to the peacebuilding construction the EU is and point to the fact that thanks to this European construction, no more war has occured within our European borders. All our activities have this core message, but some show this more than others. Last year in september we joined the campaign "Peace day" by showing the movie by Jeremy Gilley and giving information about this action on 21st of September 2009. We visit schools where we inform youngsters (17 - 18 year) about the EU and nonviolence cooperation that makes the EU work!
PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the second half of the Decade? |
To be honest I have not been active for so long as to see the progress myself. But violence is very rare in our domain.
OBSTACLES: Has your organization faced any obstacles to implementing the culture of peace and nonviolence? If so, what were they?
Our obstacles are mostly intern, namely the lack of means to improve our work and to reach out to a bigger audience. We are all volunteers and everybody knows voluntary action is difficult to maintain.
PLANS: What new engagements are planned by your organization in the short, medium and long term to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence?
As said above, we will try to join the campaign for "Peace day" each year over and over again. Moreover we have some activities planned ahead of us supporting the Belgian presidency of the EU. In August we organise a "Youth Understanding Politics" seminar that teaches youngsters (15 - 18 years old) how to reach consensus by debating and how to solve difficulties together, instead of reaching out to violence.
GLOBAL MOVEMENT: How do you think the culture of peace and nonviolence could be strengthened and supported at the world level??
By having real democratic elections everywhere over the world. By having world leaders that promote this peace culture, not only in words, but also in deeds. By making sure people are educated about history.
