PRIORITIES: All of the organization's domains of culture of peace activity |
EDUCATION FOR PEACE
TOP PRIORITY: The organization's most important culture of peace activity |
EDUCATION FOR PEACE
PARTNERSHIPS AND NETWORKS: What partnerships and networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the global movement for a culture of peace?
We are presently building our foundation and networks.
ACTIONS: What activities have been undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the ten years of the Decade? If you already made a report in 2005, your information from 2005 will be included in the 2010 report.

Our peace education focus includes building peace with ourselves, peace with each other and peace with the environment. At our website peace-building stories and ideas for activities are presented that can be used by teachers in classrooms or by parents or any community workers who work with children. The website also provides WebQuests for teachers to use with students. During the decade year Foundation was successful in obtaining funding to provide some Adelaide and regional schools and libraries with free peace-building stories packs. We provided free story workshops for those people wishing to know more about peace-building stories. We are presently seeking support from overseas bookshops that would be interested in promoting peace-building stories in their own communities. The website also presents a free peace-building storytelling guide for teachers with a preface written by Dr Jane Goodall.
The Foundation is also developing peace-building camp programmes that engage young people in community peace-building projects while developing their personal peace-building understandings and skills. We are still in the early stages of our development and plan to extend and expand our peace-building community services in the new decade.
PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the second half of the Decade? |
We believe that communities are seeking more peaceful ways of living. Yet unfortunately, we believe this is not always supported by our governments or our school systems. We intend, during the coming decade, to positively and constructively influence peace education programmes being undertaken in schools and communities within and beyond South Australia and assist in instilling a peace-building consciousness in all aspects of living and learning.
OBSTACLES: Has your organization faced any obstacles to implementing the culture of peace and nonviolence? If so, what were they?
We have had difficulty in obtaining financial support for our programmes but the support we have been given has allowed us to at least begin our programmes and we provide the necessary short fall.
PLANS: What new engagements are planned by your organization in the short, medium and long term to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence?
We believe our focus for the coming decade will expand and involve more direct youth engagement in relation to community peace-building programmes. We plan to develop are more extensive teacher workshop programme and materials that highlight the importance of building positive teacher-students relations and in particular dialogue about peace. Our website will reflect a more inclusive and international commitment to peace-building.
GLOBAL MOVEMENT: How do you think the culture of peace and nonviolence could be strengthened and supported at the world level??
We believe that teacher education and youth engagement in relation to community peace-building are essential to continually build and sustain our cultures of peace. Our website will provide us with the most efficient and effective means of promoting our work and influencing and including any other communities in peace-building programmes. An effective network to connect all organisations is vital to strengthen and support any community peace-building.
