PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
In
our first twenty years of existence we encouraged and supported schools
and other organizations to become International Peace Sites. This
provided a focus for them to expand and celebrate the many things they
wanted to do to promote a more peaceful environment for their
communities. Ten years ago we created the Nobel Peace Prize
Festival for school children to come together and teach and learn from
each other as they shared their expertise about the Nobel Laureate they
chose to study for that year. We invite Nobel Laureates to join
us. We have had very positive feedback from our participants. However, we also received feedback regarding the need for educators to be more directly supported to be Peace Educators. Three
years ago we started workshops for educators to come together to
support and share with each other, to create a community of Peace
Educators. We ask for feedback after each session and have done a
Before and After Comparison of Teacher Rating Scale.
|
OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
Money
is always an issue. We have a wonderful board of volunteers.
We are constantly reminded to be more realstic about our dreams.
We are very sensitive to educators already having many
expectations put upon them. We do not want "Peace Education" to
become just one more thing to do.
|
ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
Besides
continuing our promotion of International Peace Sites and our annual
Nobel Peace Prize Festival, between 2001 and 2005, World Citizen, Inc.
has created three "Communities of Peace Educators." We are
fortunate to have found benefactors and individual contributors who
believe very strongly in the need for educators to be supported in
their desire to promote peace. We are able to off coverage for
the price of a substitute teacher if needed. We meet in a very
comfortable setting where we allow time for educators to share their
dreams, frustrations, ideas and activities. We have guest
presenters on various topics. We have worktime to follow through
on their ideas.
|
ADVICE: What advice would you like to
give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a
culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade? |
|
PARTNERSHIPS: What partnerships and
networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the
global movement for a culture of peace? |
Our organization is a member of the Minnesota Alliance of Peace (MAP) along with 60 other justice and peace organizations. We
also participate in a support network of other organizations involved
with schools, i.e., Human Rights Center, Institute for Global Studies,
MN Advocates for Human Rights, MN International Center, Resource Center
of the Americas and Growing Communities. We also coordinate our
programs with Augsburg and St. Thomas Universities.
|
PLANS: What new engagements are
planned by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence in the second half of the Decade (2005-2010)? |
We
will continue to expand the number of Communities for Peace Educators.
Our web site is being totally overhauled to be more useful,
particularly to our Peace Educators so they can have an ongoing access
to continue their communicating with other educators. Resources
and activities will also be available.
