PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
After
initial resistance by students, they have had success in working
through issues peacefully, rather than resorting to
violence. And those students who stay with us, over time,
come to appreciate and respect one another, even those who are
difficult to like, and realize that everyone is unique and is
valuable
|
OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
The
cultural values that promote revenge, toughness, and solving conflicts
violently rather than looking for underlying causes, and the wish to
have things taken care of quickly.
|
ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
We
have instituted a restorative justice program. Members of
our community who have been harmed can ask a committee to help heal the
damage and explore reasons for the conflict. We also promote on a
daily basis a culture of problem solving rather than violence.
|
ADVICE: What advice would you like to
give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a
culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade? |
We
need to treat all people with respect and compassion, to accept
everyone and honor and promote their unique gifts and talents.
|
PARTNERSHIPS: What partnerships and
networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the
global movement for a culture of peace? |
Rice
County Corrections, The University of Minnesota Center for Restorative
Justice, the International Democratic Education Conference.
|
PLANS: What new engagements are
planned by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence in the second half of the Decade (2005-2010)? |
Offer persons outside of our organization our services in restorative justice.
Offer workshops to other groups on the practice of restorative justice.
Offer retreats for young people so they become more aware of their gifts to the world.
