PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
The
Alliance of Peacemakers is in its 10th year in 2005, and has been
growing both in numbers of organizations and activity each year.
We are an umbrella organization with a very low budget; at the
same time, we currently enroll 59 peace and justice and environment
related organizations, and growing both in programs and reach. We
have developed no specific indicators to measure progress, except to
note that we have made improvements every year, and our member
organizations tend to be active in their areas of interest.
|
OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
The
most important obstacle is probably the fact that our organizations
have diverse interests, and have some difficulty getting interested in
companion organizations programs. We tend to be 'silo'ed'.
As in most organizations, there are a relatively small number of
very active people.
|
ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
We
have annually had a celebration of peace which occurred on the 2nd
Tuesday of November each year. In 2003, four of our organizations
sponsored an International Day of Peace program on September 21; in
2004, we moved our annual celebration to September 21 and focused on
the International Day of Peace. In 2005, we are moving our annual
celebration back to Nov 8, but are going to great lengths to have many
of our organizations focus in International Day of Peace on, before and
after September 21. In short, the United Nations International
Day of Peace has become a genuine focus of our organization.
Currently we are showing and publicizing the documentary, Peace
One Day, about the successful efforts of Jeremy Gilley to establish the
United Nations International Day of Peace on September 21st each year.
We have begun contacts with the area cultural community,
especially music and arts organizations, to consciously program peace
related themes.

ADVICE: What advice would you like to
give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a
culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade? |
It
is most important that the Secretary General and the General Assembly
show by example their interest in the initiatives of peace. This
could include more specific and easily found references to the
International Day of Peace on the United Nations website.
|
PARTNERSHIPS: What partnerships and
networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the
global movement for a culture of peace? |
We have just joined the ConnectUS network. We are a network of our own, with 59 associated organizations.
|
PLANS: What new engagements are
planned by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence in the second half of the Decade (2005-2010)? |
We
just plan to continue looking for every opportunity to showcase peace.
We aren't sure what this will end up being, except that we are
committed to continue and to expand our efforts as we have in the last
ten years, going from 10 organizations to 59.
