PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade?

We have seen progress toward a culture of peace by monitoring the sales of human rights and peace education materials with our Traveling Human Rights and Peace Store and our on-line store at www.humanrightsandpeacestore.org. In the past year our sales have doubled and we are receiving requests to do more human rights trainings in K-12 settings and more requests to do peace education artistry work. Our book "Peacemaker's A,B,C's for Young Children: A Guide for teaching conflict resolution with a peace table" is now used in over 6,000 locations worldwide.  Our newly published book, "The Compassionate Rebel: Energized by Anger, Motivated by Love" featuring how ordinary citizens are making peace regardless of the challenges of daily life, was selected as one of 20 books in the United States for creating positive social change and is now slated for becoming a television documentary. We have also been invited by a radio station to do Compassionate Rebel Radio: Stories and News for Creating a Caring Culture.

OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?

Our biggest challenge has been a change in staff and having to take the time to go go through a new learning curve. Our other co-director had to leave due to family matters. We are also a small non-profit organization and rely heavily on partnerships with others who are extremely busy which causes delays. We also have more ideas than we can possibly accomplish with our present size.

ACTIONS: What actions have been undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?

We have taken the following actions to promote a culture of Peace and Nonviolence during 2001-2005: 1) Provided Human Rights Training to educators 2) Published book "The Compassionate Rebel: Energized by Anger, Motivated by Love - 50 Stories of How Ordinary Citizens Make Peace 3) Developed website with the Universityof Minnesota Human Rights and Resource Center www.humanrightsandpeacestore.org which provides  human rights and peace education books, curricula, posters, training guides, multi-media materials, gifts, bookmarks, kindness currency and other resources and makes them easily accessible to educators, students, community organizers, youth workers, and parents 4)Published peacemaking articles for national publication, "Public School Montessorian for infusing peace education into exisiting curricula 5)appeared as key note speakers and workshop presenters on the topic of mainstreaming peace and human rights education in our schools 6)conducted peace artist residencies in serveral schools and community organizations 7) Attended several hundreds of educational conferences and community events with our Traveling Human Rights and Peace Store 8) Submitted orignal story to the latest Chicken Soup of the Soul Series - Stories for a Better World 9) Trained all Minnesota Human Rights Commissioners as speakers for schools and how to use on-line human rights curriculum "This Is My Home" 10) Currently in development - Compassionate Rebel TV Documentary and Compassionate Rebel Radio - Stories and News for Creating a Caring Cullure.

ADVICE: What advice would you like to give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade?

Just as we would not expect children to solve complicated math problems with a few weeks of classroom exposure, nor should we expect students to create a culture of peace and nonviolence without a PreK-12 scope and sequence of human rights and peace education.

PARTNERSHIPS: What partnerships and networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the global movement for a culture of peace?

University of Minnesota Human Rights Resource Center, Global Network of Huamn Rights and Peace Educators, Minnesota Alliance of Peacemakers, International Peace Bureau, Hague Appeal for Peace, Peace and Justice Network, Publishing companies that produce human rights and peace education materials, Popular Educators Network, Violence Prevention Coordinators, National Association of Multicutural Educators, Classroom teachers

PLANS: What new engagements are planned by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence in the second half of the Decade (2005-2010)?

We are publishing five new books: "Playing with Peace" for PreK-3rd grade educators, "Opening Doors: Participatory Leadership for Teens in the 21st Century," "Expanding the Circle: A Teen Mentoring Peacmaker's Guide," "Compassionate Rebel II" and an on-line "Compassionate Rebel Teacher's Guide. We also plan to develop an on-line train the trainers modul of "Peacemaker's A,B,C's: A guide for teaching conflict resolution with a peace table. We are continually adding new materials to the Human Rights and Peace Store. Our next update is scheduled to be complete by September 30, 2005.
