PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
GERDF
has participated in a number of major UN events such as the World
Summit on Sustainable Development and has facilitated, in its capacity
as the Asian Liaison for Communication Coordination Committee for the
United Nations, a number of cultural celebrations and observances.
We
have seen a marked desire by people of the world to live in friendship,
peace and harmony, and have noted many more initiatives internationally
for better understanding among people and a desire to engage in a true
dialogue among civilizations.

OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
Obstacles that have prevented progress are personal ambitions and an unwillingness to live the "Golden Rule".
|
ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
We
have brought a number of persons to China to understand the cultural
and environmental heritage and to engage in an exchange of views that
have culminated in commemorations of events such as Earth Day at UN
Headquarters and an observance of World Water Day.

ADVICE: What advice would you like to
give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a
culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade? |
Promote
a relationship with many more sectors of civil society than are
currently done, such as the program of FASHIONATIONS, uniting the
nations of the world through the language of fashion, as well as more
joint initiatives of the staff and of NGOs in promoting events with the
involvement of athletes for peace.
Establish other days in the
list of observances that promote the idea of the culture of peace, such
as harmony, a Chinese concept.
Establish the Peacebuilding Commission encourage NGOs to hold consultations on this topic.
Make
sure that the annual DPI/NGO Conference includes a workshop and/or
plenary on the Peacebuilding Commission and the role of NGOs, civil
society and the private sector in the support mechanism in the
Secretariat.

CSD/NGO Steering Committee, UN Headquarters (CSD being the Commission on Sustainable Development)

PLANS: What new engagements are
planned by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence in the second half of the Decade (2005-2010)? |
Work
with the Olympic Host Cities of 2006, 2008, 2010 and after July 6, the
2012 Host Committee to promote the culture of peace.
