PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
Houston
is a metropolitan area of some 4 million people. Tracking
progress can be rather difficult. However, it is clear that the
increase in the number of FOR Creating a Culture of Peace trainings as
well as other events and actions are spreading out through the greater
Houston area. In our reorganization, we did develop some
indicators to measure progress, but have yet to apply them to
activities to date. That will happen over the course of 2005 and 2006.
The "peace culture" in general in Houston is growing, from
progressive peace oriented political action groups to nonviolence
training in schools.
|
OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
The
largest obstacle faced by the Decade of Nonviolence-Houston has been a
major reorganization that occurred in 2004. The organization's
leadership structure, membership, and strategic plan were all
restructured. This reorganization will provide renewed energy and
focus to meet the challenges of the second half of the decade.
|
ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
Our organization began in November 2001 with an INAUGURAL DINNER featuring Reverend James Lawson. There have been a series of showings of the documentary series A Force More Powerful. We have set up a Wall of Hope display in various locations. Several study groups have formed to teach Fellowship of Reconciliation's program, Creating a Culture of Peace. ********************************

ADVICE: What advice would you like to
give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a
culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade? |
|
PARTNERSHIPS: What partnerships and
networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the
global movement for a culture of peace? |
Organizations
become part of the Decade of Nonviolence-Houston network as "endorsing
organizations." Our website is built for networking and
education. Endorsing organizations are invited: To
identify their programs and activities as part of the International
Decade for Building a Culture of Peace and Nonviolence for the Children
of the World and to allow identification as a "Decade of
Nonviolence-Houston Partner" organization. To publicize
the peace-making programs of other Decade Partnering organizations in
ways that are appropriate for their organization. Currently, over 75 organizations have endorsed the Decade of Nonviolence-Houston.
|
PLANS: What new engagements are
planned by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence in the second half of the Decade (2005-2010)? |
The
Decade is organizing a week long peace event in mid-September of 2005.
We will kick off the week on Sept. 17 with a Building a Culture of
Peace Conference at Texas Southern University. Conference
workshops will include sessions on listening, non-violent
communication, building peace altars, and more! Then there will
be a variety of activities hosted by our endorsing organizations
throughout the week. Peace Week will culminate on Sept. 24 with a
dinner and an awards presentation for outstanding peacebuilders in
Houston. We hope that all of our endorsing organizations will be
involved as much as possible.
