PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
Our
branch in Malta has just started two months ago. We are working in
human rights education. There has been quite a good response in the
schools in which we delivered workshops. Some children offered to
become members of our NGO in order to make contact with children in
schools in other countries especially those who are in difficult social
situations. We are targeting primary and secondary school children. The
indicators for the progress is quite vast in order to cover the whole
human rights topics. So for the moment we are focusing on just a few:
racial equality, freedom of expression and opinion, freedom of seeking
aylum. The indicators for the progress in these lines has been the
commnets and reactions of the children at the end of the workshops,
which has been one of of more openness and tolerance fortunately.
|
OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
The
attitude of some teachers at schools , and also parents at home who
have direct influence on the children. The teachers and head teachers
also seem to be in need of information for human rights. If the
children are taught about respect, but the next day thay are treated by
humilation by the teacher or their parents, that is quite a
counteraction to our work. So we encourage teacher and parent training
as well as children's education. We have in plan to join up with the
Amnesty International branch in Malta to accomplish adult education in
human rights.
|
ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
The
Maltese branch of IDEAL International has only started functioning two
months ago. But the NGO sponsored a painting exhibition of Lida
Sherafatmand (its representative for Malta) at the Sorbonne University
in Paris. This exhibtion was an especial one because it marked the
launching of Humanitarian Art Manifesto, an art manifesto for peace
promotion signed by several artists around the world, and several
important personages in peace field and NGO's signed it as supportive
comittee. (link: http://tapnet.info/peacedirect/index.php?showtopic=502 )
Through
Transcend: Art and Peace Network, simultaneously with this exhibtion in
Paris, there were several other artistic events held in different parts
of the world to launch the Humanitarian Art Manifesto internationally.
IDEAL International is a partner of Transcend: Art and Peace for its
education program internationally
|
ADVICE: What advice would you like to
give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a
culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade? |
|
PARTNERSHIPS: What partnerships and
networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the
global movement for a culture of peace? |
IDEAL
International in Malta is partners with Transcend: Art and Peace. In
very near future it has in plan to collaborate with the Amnesty
International branch here, and Jesuit Refugee Service. We are open to
take part in any activity with other NGO's which promotes human rights
and a culture of peace.
|
PLANS: What new engagements are
planned by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence in the second half of the Decade (2005-2010)? |
We
have a kit for human rights education which uses art for all its lesson
plans. We hope to get this publication as a regular book for school
curriculae here, and we hope to send copies for children in third world
countries.
