PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
During
the first years on the Decade (2001-2003) in Russia in general and in
women’s movement in particular there was a significant progress in
promotion goals and ideas of the Decade. Due to the generous assistance
of the Bureau of UNESCO in Moscow several conferences, symposiums and
roundtables were organized, where WILPF Russian Section presented our
reports about the contribution of Russian women to the Culture of
Peace.
Unfortunately, during last two years the interest of officials and NGOs to the Decade have been lost.

OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
The
main reason to this phenomenon is the lack of finances and appearance
of new and more burning problems such as globalization, traffic and
violence against women, necessity of prevention of armed conflicts.
|
ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
Russian
WILPF section organized itself and participated in many different
events in Russia dedicated to the involvement of women in the
pacifistic actions in the close cooperation with other women’s
organizations in Russia especially concentrated on the problem of
elimination of violence against women, which in our country is a
problem number one and relates to the destiny of thousands of women.

ADVICE: What advice would you like to
give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a
culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade? |
As
an advice to the UN, we can recommend to elaborate a more concrete plan
of action for the second part of the Decade, to promote more women to
the Directive Boards of the UN system and within the country and to
demand from all governments to implement goals of Decade more strictly.
