PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
Yes
there has been progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence
during the said period. GZO Peace Institute works with peace
partners in the provincial and community levels all over the
Philippines and progress has been observed in the proliferation of
culture of peace workshops that is being conducted by our partners with
their member communities, especially in Mindanao. This also
includes conducting culture of peace workshops with local government
officials and members of the armed forces.
An increasing number
of requests for us to conduct a workshop on peace or culture of peace
is also a concrete indicator of heightened awareness and need of people
of this topic.
|
OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
The
prevailing culture of power through the use of guns and violence poses
a great obstacle. This pervades in the psyche and is being
reinforced by irresponsible media reporting and portrayals of events. Moreover,
the customary practice of indifference to violence when not directly
hit is widespread. Apathy is counter-culture to peace

did the following in 2004: 3.1 convened a Forum on the Gains and Challenges of Peacebuilding; 3.2
