PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
Yes
and no. The main work of Palestinians for Peace and Democracy is
on the Israeli/Palestinian issue. It is well known to everyone
how sad the situation is in the Holy Land. Peace is still
elusive. At the same time, there are more and more people that
are getting involved in peace work. There is a record number of
organizations that are trying to promote peace.
|
OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
The
media and its lack of promotion of peace activities and peacemakers,
and the lack of funding for peace work and peace organizations are two
important obstacles. For example, you will find stories and
stories in the archives of the U.S. media about the violence in the
Middle East -- but you will hardly find a story about a peace
demonstration or nonviolent action -- and there are many of them.
When it comes to funding, one of the Settlers' organizations
receives more money and support than all the peace organizations on
both sides of the Conflict.
|
ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
There
are many examples as we are in the midst of developing a nonviolent
movement and campaign, the Palestinian Campaign for Freedom and Peace,
with Gush Shalom on the Israeli side. However, one of our best
examples was the coordinating of the Gandhi Peace Delegation to the
Holy Land, August 2004. The Delegation of faith leaders was led
by Arun Gandhi, M.K. Gandhi's grandson. During the Delegation's
tour throughout Palestine and Israel, rallies and demonstrations and
dialogs were held to encourage, teach, inspire, coordinate, and affirm
nonviolent actions and alliances. More can be seen by going to
the trip blog at www.P4PD.org.

|
ADVICE: What advice would you like to
give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a
culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade? |
Implement
all the UN resolutions equally and the world will look to the UN as a
moral leader, not a politician. So let your morality speak.
|
PARTNERSHIPS: What partnerships and
networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the
global movement for a culture of peace? |
Gush Shalom, Jerusalem Peace Malaysia, Putrajaya San Antonio Peace Center, Texas Jewish Voice for Peace, national Palestinian Agricultural Relief Committee, Ramallah M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence, Memphis, TN
|
PLANS: What new engagements are
planned by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence in the second half of the Decade (2005-2010)? |
To
gather all Palestinian peace activists in a Peoples' Peace Summit to
declare the Palestinian peace actions and commitment to nonviolence
with Israel. We are in the midst of soliciting funds for a
massive nonviolence training program for farmers and students in the
Occupied Territories.
