PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
Three
years old Hope For Justice has seen a moderate progress towards a
culture of pease. Our major contribution in Ghana has been to help in
entrenching democracy and good governance and consolidating the gains
made by national governments.During 2004 Presidential and Parliamentary
elections Hope For Justice issued two separate press release prior to
the elections. The first one was released to the contesting candidates
in the general elections in general and to the parliamentary candidates
in the Kwaebibirem constituency in particular and copy to the Daily
Graphic and one Koforidua -based private radio station and the chiefs
in the area to remind all on the need to preserve the peace
prevailing at the time.It was also to appeal to all to desist
from acts of violence and others that would mar the electioneering
process in order to prevent the repetition of nasty incidents that
occured during the 2000 elections in the constituency. The second letter
was to call ctizens to go about their normal duties and exercise their
franchise during the election .
|
OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
We
contributed to prevent violence, fear and intimidations during 2004
elections and have also helped to educate the electorates in
Kwaebibirem constituency.
|
ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
We issued press releases to promote violence free elections in 2004 elections
We
participated in a peace walk through the principal streets of
Asamankese in Asamankese District during 2003 and 2004 international
Day of peace respectively. The walk, which was jointly initiaed and
organized by Obra Foundation and Hope For Justice was to create
awareness on the need for peace in the region and also exhibit the
close unity that exist among the youth and the various political
parties and candidates, especially in 2004 as we were approaching the
general elections. Interestingly, this programme was self funded yet it
was very successful.
We also jointly initiated peace and soccer
tournament as a tool for promoting unity and peace through
soccer.Unfortunately we could not get sponsors to award outstanding
teams. Participants acknowledged the importance of such activities in
promotinf unity, thus urging the organizers to use more of such forums
to propagate peace message.
|
ADVICE: What advice would you like to
give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a
culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade? |
We
wish to suggest that more action rather than words should come from the
Secretary-General and the General Assembly to encourage Youth-focused
groups and organizations to go into action packed research in violent
prone communities and the deorived ones to 'kill' the root causes
before they explode.
|
PARTNERSHIPS: What partnerships and
networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the
global movement for a culture of peace? |
We
are only about 3 years old .Currently, our major partners are, World
Association of Non-Governmental Organization(WANGO), Seventh-Day
Adventist Church,Ghana Aids Treatment and Coalition(GATAC).We are yet
to enjoy UN Programme of Action Partnership. We participate in
International Day of Pease and would like to in your parliamentary
forums. It would also be helpful in promoting peace if UNP can join our
Peace and Succer programme.
|
PLANS: What new engagements are
planned by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence in the second half of the Decade (2005-2010)? |
Our
next engagement in 2005 to promote the culture of peace is to organize
peace soccer and award in September at the national level.
Since
2008 is Ghana's next election year, we hope to organize peace socer
among the four major politcal party presidential and parliamentary
candidates in Ghana.
