PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
We
are a group of Malawian primary school teachers from three schools:
Domasi Government Primary School, Domasi Demonstration School, and
Bwanje LEA School. We started our organization in April 2004, after
learning about the role of education in promoting peace. Our main
activity since April has been to meet, read and discuss how to promote
peace through our teaching. We have not developed any indicators to
measure progress yet, but we have developed some guidelines for
teaching our lessons with peace goals.
|
OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
The
most important obstacles so far have been funding to enable us carry
out activities. We would like to involve more teachers and pupils in
Malawi; learn more about peace education; and participate in
educational activities, workshops and conferences on peace. All this
needs funding.
|
ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
Because
we are a recent organization, and because we started our activities
through our own initiative, we have not yet reached a stage where we
can organize activities to celebrate the International Day of Peace.
But we will discuss how we can start making preparations for this
year's celebration. So far our actions have been at the classroom
level. We sarted with a two-week writing workshop in April 2004, and
have met on a weekly basis to plan lessons. We have also been on an
educational visit with pupils to a heritage site in Malawi, as a way of
researching our history and identity.
|
ADVICE: What advice would you like to
give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a
culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade? |
Our
advice to the Secretary General and the General Assembly for promoting
a culture of peace and non-violence is to spread the message about
peace through education to all schools, teachers and students in all
the world's classrooms. Nobody ever told us about the Declaration of
Programs for A Culture of Peace, we stumbled upon it on our own. If the
world is going to make progress towards peace, let's start with the
schools, teachers and pupils.
|
PARTNERSHIPS: What partnerships and
networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the
global movement for a culture of peace? |
We
have been in touch with the Forum for Dialogue and Peace in Malawi.
They have made good progress in promoting peace in Malawi, and we would
like to add education to their focus.
|
PLANS: What new engagements are
planned by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence in the second half of the Decade (2005-2010)? |
Celebrate the 2005 International Day of Peace on Sept. 21 Conduct a workshop to learn more about peace education Obtain funding to attend a conference on peace education
