PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
Yes,
We have distributed thousand of IEC materials pegged on peace, justice,
reconciliation, HIV/AIDS, drug abuse among others throughout the
country. We were able to reach more than 100,000 people with a
message of peace by use of camel caravan to attract people and indicate
that change is a process and takes time. In return. The audience and
participant learned a lot on HIV/ aids, conflict resolution among the
youth. The level of conflicts in some area subsided. Many people joined
the organization very much willing to participate in its future
activities. We have managed to form 10 (ten)Peace clubs in areas
visited especially in the village. Some of our youth took part in a
greatlakes peace caravan. Youth leaders training on leadership has been
taking place ensuring they are informed skilled and enhanced capacity
building in areas visited. it was bottom to approach.
|
OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
The
greatest challenge was limited financial and material resources where
by the youth being a grassroot organisation not many funding agencies
were sure if the organisation would be able to manage all event and its
sustainability even though it was clear in the project proposal.
Lack
to of support by some of the local leaders, with fear that youth will
be organised and it would be hard to manage them by their divid and
rule policy.
|
ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
VYP
basically seeks to unite the youth through youth-centred and driven
initiatives. Its main objective is to enhance youth participation in
all spheres of societal life, be it social, culture, economic and
governance, through building and boosting their capacities, inculcating
positive social values, involving them in decision making and
implementation of initiatives, economic empowerment among others.
Since
its formation, the organization has as mentioned above, been able to
organize a successful peace caravan trail (2004) from Isiolo through
various towns to Machakos. It has also been mobilizing youth to start
various sport clubs and income generating activities in their immediate
localities, around the themes of peace, HIV/AIDS, drug abuse Millenium
Development Goals and many others
VYP has organized caravan
trail to further preach the message of peace to the affected areas and
Kenya in general. The main idea behind this initiative is that peace is
key to any country’s development. A country without peace and stability
cannot attract both local and foreign investors, hence resulting in
poor economic growth and increased incidence of poverty. Investors are
interested in an atmosphere of peace and security where property and
investments are protected against theft and looting. We organise
rallies on 21st September just before the caravan begins.
VYP
has organised drawing competition on peace promotion in schoolsin
partnership with ICAF. Has formed peace clubs in school. Started
football tournaments for youth and refugee integration in the Kenya
community.
Organised workshops and training on youth and
conflict resolution. Has greatly partnered with Keny Human Right in
community policing and Human rights training. Has sent a youth for a
course on workng with conflict in UK.
|
ADVICE: What advice would you like to
give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a
culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade? |
I
would like to recommend that priorities be given to youth and
organisations workking at the grassroot level to promote peace. Bottom
top approach. Also more youth to be involved in the decision making
giving them a voice and a choice.
|
