Interfaith
Peace-building Initiative (IPI) is an interfaith movement in Ethiopia
with the purpose of bring together people of diverse faiths in order to
promote enduring daily interfaith cooperation, to end religiously
motivated violence and to create a couture of peace, justice and
healing for the earth and all living beings. It is a member of United
Religions Initiative. People from a wide array of faith all over the
world have joined this growing community, which seeks primarily to
respect diversity of beliefs and to find common ground to work together
to deepen mutual understanding and trust and create a culture of peace.
IPI is a registered NGO in Ethiopia with Ministry of Justice and its members have been carrying out various peace activities.
In
answering the call of the international Culture of peace year on 1st
January, 2000 in collaboration with UNESCO IPI organized and
inaugurated a Peace Monument ceremony, in the compound of the
Organization of African Unity (OAU) which is called now African Union
with the theme and intention of “Welcoming the Millennium with Peace”.
On
September 18th, 2001 IPI members met to pray together in remembrance of
all those who lost there lives and have been deeply affected by the
sorrowful tragedy of the 11th September. These and other activities
examples of interfaith dialogue, cooperation and harmony.
At the
beginning of 2000, in the process of considering what kind of peace
activities could help bring about a positive change in society, we
discovered that young people expresses a strong desire to come together
in an interfaith encounter to reflect on an agenda for reconciliation
and to work towards promoting peaceful relationships in the society. We
thought what a blessing it would be to focus this powerful youthful
energy in a positive way! Thus the IPI leadership team conducted a
series of six workshops with idea of nurturing the new generation for
contributing to a peaceful future. We strongly believe that a more
peaceful world is within our reach if we work for it.
The
participants who attended the series of workshop were drawn from the
various faith groups in the country. These included the Orthodox,
Catholics, Evangelical Church, Muslims and Bahais. In addition to this
other youth from different youth clubs and Associations also took part.
The IPI leadership team employed feedback mechanisms from participants
to build up on each one of the successive presentations.
Some themes of the workshop included:
Respecting Diversity Communications and Leadership Skills for Peace Building Cultivating Non-violence Thinking The Role of Religions in Reconciliation Culture of Peace Connecting Faith and Action through Cultural Reconciliation Methods Positive Thinking The role of human rights in promotion of peace, justice and development I Ethiopia Gender Issues and Peace-building HIV/AIDS and Peace-building Relation among Religions and Faith Groups in Ethiopia
