PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade?

In our domains of action we have seen both progress and most recently some setbacks in efforts towards a culture of peace and non-violence.

Peace education initiatives in schools have been well received and their effectiveness has been noted with the reduction in reported incidences of conflicts, in-school fires, and other violent incidences causing severe damage and human casualties perpetrated by students especially in boarding schools.

OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?

There are several important obstacles that prevent progress in the peace culture among youth and cause agitation within school systems and communities. They include drug abuse and alcoholism that make many young people irrational and volatile, negative peer pressure, indiscipline, and most lethal of all poverty, that pushes many young people into a hostile life of violence and crime for the sake of survival.

ACTIONS: What actions have been undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?

Peace it Together Campaign: www.unoy.org. Nepad APRM-We are fully engaged in the ongoing transformation of Africa’s peace, security and governance terrain through involvement in NEPAD process that underlines peace, security and good governance as basic prerequisites for the renewal of the African Continent. The APRM is a critical instrument for building the capacities to implement these reforms. Amani Africa: ‘Addressing the root causes and causalities of conflict in high schools in urban areas and forging a path to a lasting peace’ It involves making peace education a component of schools curriculum, initiated in a dynamic and youth affable methods, such as clubs, debates, poetry and essay writing competitions, arts and sporting events etc. The intention of Amani Africa is to facilitate renewed and better coordinated support for early and decisive action to prevent or resolve conflict, by making available peace-building mechanisms to schools,-and young people everywhere in general-as well as encouraging increased liberal interactions within and between the student body and staff associates, so as:

ADVICE: What advice would you like to give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade?

To effectively address the root causes of conflict we must first find a way to annihilate or at least drastically reduce the evil of poverty by creating an enabling environment for poverty reduction and community development. We need to communicate more, communicate better and work conscientiously to build even stronger bridges of understanding that in turn will  bring us closer to a more just and peaceful world.

PARTNERSHIPS: What partnerships and networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the global movement for a culture of peace?

World Youth Peace Summit, Oxfam International Youth Parliament, International Young Professionals Foundation, Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDS, ActAlive, ARYI, UNOY Peacebuilders, WSIS Youth Caucus, UN Youth, UN Habitat, Africapeacenet, NGO-ICT

PLANS: What new engagements are planned by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence in the second half of the Decade (2005-2010)?

Control Arms Campaign, Peace It Together, Amani Africa-Peace Education Program (including psychosocial support, entrepreneurship and life-skills training) and other peace building initiatives especially targeting youth, children, orphans and young women who are all very vulnerable, in the belief that we can teach them how to embrace the peace culture, and even if their parents and the elders choose to resolve conflict by picking up arms they in turn will know, and choose the (better way) most pacifistic means of resolving disputes and also help facilitate reconciliation. We will continue to encourage the reaffirmation of faith in the equal and inalienable rights and inherent dignity for all people by recognizing the foundation of freedom, justice and peace for all members of the human family.
