PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
It
the beginning we in the Iraqi peace center thought that things will
work out very well. We had some desire to work , in spite of the
terrible situation of Iraq , in spite of having a couple of bomb blasts
so near to the Hawar Gallery which is the art gallery where we used to
have our meetings and workshops , We were full with desire and
hope in this new expierence in a country like iraq, which had
witnessed three wars within two decades.
We had two foreign
people helping us. Tthey were Martin Edwards from the US , who is a
journalst who worked in in Iraq , and Han San Jin, a Korean peace
activist, These two people were working too much so as to help us
and putting us on the right way, but they have been in so many
problems, and so we were. We have planned to do so many programs in
terms of peace culture and cultural exchange, but no one of them have
been done . All of that happened because of the current finanicial
situation of Iraq, and the huge waves of violence that have destroyed
the country .
|
OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
The
main two obstacles are the funding and the security situation. As
Iraqis we became familiar with bomb blasts , so we can work under this
situation, but the two foreign people who were helping us couldn’t
continue with that. Mr Edwards and Mr Han were able to help us
with raising funds, as they both have experince and relations in such
activities, so since they left, all of our activites have been stopped
, as we can not do their role. We are not in touch with the out side
world. That was a terrible disaster for our center.
|
ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
The
actions we did were too limited, but they were very great compared to
our situation and abilities. As a member in the Iraqi peace
center, I was running a peace program called "students to students",
which was correspondence between an Iraqi intermediate school and
American students from New York. I did that when I was a training
teacher in the areas surrounding Baghdad. We gave workshops about
human rights and peace rights. We attended three conferences
concerning human rights and peace education. We had plans to do
projects with children , and a march for peace, but no one was done.
|
ADVICE: What advice would you like to
give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a
culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade? |
I
think that peace is a huge sea that ordinary people know nothing
about , so the UN should show people what peace is through media ,
education , TV. The UN should work in the areas where wars
spread, and the UN should cooperate with the government to work
things out, as every thing in here is being controlled by the
governments ,
|
PARTNERSHIPS: What partnerships and
networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the
global movement for a culture of peace? |
We
were about to have a net work with APRA, My self, I had a
relation with IIPE , International Insititue of Peace Education.
|
PLANS: What new engagements are
planned by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence in the second half of the Decade (2005-2010)? |
No plans for the future if the situation didn’t improve
