PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
The
Intellectual Multaka for Innovation has succeeded in diversifying and
widening the scope of its activities, as well as increasing its
beneficiaries, which can be attributed to two reasons * First, the Multaka has been cooperating with other organizations which have similar objectives and interests. * Second, the Arab climate is becoming more appropriate for receiving the winds of freedom and reform. * The Multaka has also been dealing with certain issues of global concern, particularly the issue of religious reform.
Measures of success: * The number and diversity of activities. * The activities’ ability to achieve the goals of the organization. * Sustainability of the activities. * Constant rise in the demand for the activities and the increase in the number of beneficiaries. * The activities’ ability to keep pace with the new and constant changes taking place in the region.

OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?

* Local legislations that impede the activities * Funding. * Political unrest.

ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
The
activities of the Intellectual Multaka for Innovation cover a wide
range of concerns; it has been organizing scientific and intellectual
seminars tackling Islamic and Arab thoughts. It is also responsible for
the following:
* The Intellectual Forum which serves as a
platform for serious debates, open dialogue, enlightened endeavours and
all intellectual trends.
* Al-Multaka Magazine which is a
remarkable contribution to innovation and rejuvenation; a window of
pragmatic mentalities based upon scientific approaches. It is also
concerned with contemporary intellectual and philosophical issues
currently prevailing in both the Arab and Muslim worlds.
* The
Multaka's annual book which discusses important Arab and Islamic
intellectual issues, and adopts a new discourse to communicate with the
younger generation. Two issues of this book have been published to
date; the first was titled "Islamic Rejuvenation discourse: Ages and
Questions" and was translated into English. The second issue was issued
under the title "Islam in a Changing World: Islamic Reform Policies
after 11 September".
* The organization's official website
containing articles, research papers and book reviews that enrich
creative awareness; encourage active thinking, research and
enlightened endeavours; and attempts to contribute to religious reform
in the Arab World.. The website is always in contact with elite writers
and researchers concerned with its issues in the Arab world.

Joint organization of a number of conferences, including conference on
the Rejuvenation of Religious Discourse (Damascus University, 10-12
April 2004) The Multaka is also collaborating with the International
Institute of Islamic Thought in Beirut and Washington and the Lebanese
Centre for Civilization Studies to organize a conference on the new
developments of the Holy Qur’anic studies (1990-2005) due to be held in
Beirut from 5-7 July 2005.
* Delivering a number of lectures in
some of Arab capitals, such as Damascus, Beirut, Amman and Cairo, the
last of which was given at the Cairo Centre for Human Rights on 16
February 2005.

networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the
global movement for a culture of peace? |
* The Intellectual Foundation in Damascus * The International Institute of Islamic Thought in Beirut and Washington.

PLANS: What new engagements are
planned by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence in the second half of the Decade (2005-2010)? |
* Widening the scope of the Multaka's activities as regards number and geographic coverage. * Training personnel on management of the Multaka's activities * Adopting new approaches and innovated methods in performing the activities and achieving the objectives of the Multaka.
