PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
MiA
(Diversity at Work) is mainly working on developing measures for
diversity at workplaces and in the Norwegian society. We are mainly
working on issues connected to integration of immigrants and refugees
(ethnic minorities) at public and private workplaces (companies,
trades, public services etc.) in Norway. In this context we are working
with conflict solving between ethnic and national minorities and the
majority at workplaces and more understanding on how to cooperate in
the society with different traditions and social and cultural
backgrounds. MiA has developed the tool "Mangfoldsspeilet" (The
Diversity Mirror) directed to public services and public and private
companies. It has been used as a tool for improving the coustumors
services in a society with an increasing diversity of ethnic and
national citizens. Particularly there is a need of competence for
providing public services to immigrants and and refugees. The tool,
"Mangfoldsspeilet", will also function as indicators for measuring
progress together with the development of "Mangfoldsprisen" (The
Divirsity Prize) for providing the best diversity diversity services.

OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
The
most important obstacles are negative attitudes against employing
immigrants and refugees (ethnic and language minorities) at the
workplaces. There is also a need for providing several measures as
combining language training and vocational training (professional
skills) at the workplaces and social integration measures.
|
ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
MiA
is promoting several projects and measures directed to improved
integration of immigrants and refugees through publications, programmes
and training facilities. All of this will be parts of non-violence and
peace promotion and we are taking particularly part in the Norwegian
Governments actions against poverty and social exclusion. Our
participation is directed to avoiding the exclusion of ethnic and
national minorities in Norway. MiA is also participating in the
EU-programme the European Intercultural Workplace (EIW). We have not
taken any action yeat on the celebration of the International Day of
Peace, but would like to cooperate (participate) in any arrengement for
that day.
|
ADVICE: What advice would you like to
give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a
culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade? |
We
would like to advice the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to
promote possibilities for better integration of ethnic, national and
language minorities in the working life. Conflict solving and social
integration at the workplaces is a necessity for improving the culture
of peace and nonviolence within the national society to avoid racial
discrimination and to promote diversity.

Workplace with partners in 10 EU-countries. We believe that this
network can proveide for a global movement for a culture of peace.
