PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
Several
of our partners both in South East Asia and South-America are
practising their human rights of participating in the democraticy by
developing methodes to make sure their voice is being heard. Many
partners experience threats and conflict in their area due to
disagreements with powerful timbercompanies and corrupt politicians.
However, they continue the struggle by forcing their voice through to
the decisionmakers, and recently their efforts prevaled.
VICTORY: Huge Brazilian Indian Reserve Established in Disputed Amazon Rainforest
President
Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of Brazil has ratified the Raposa Serra do
Sol Indian Reserve, with a belated stroke of the pen granting
protection to some 6,370 square-miles (16,498 square-kilometers) of
Amazonian rainforest in Brazil's northern state of Roraima. After more
than thirty years of struggle, the traditional land of 15,000 Macuxi,
Patamona, Ingarico, Wapichana and Taurepang people has finally been
officially and fully recognized as theirs. (source: http://forests.org/blog/archives/2005/04/huge_brazilian.asp )
|
OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
One
major problem is no recognition of indigenous peoples rights in many of
the areas we work. Many countries have not ratified the ILO 169.
Commercial
interests are allowed to operate and expand without the prior and
informed consent of the indigenous and forest people.
War and conflict prevent sustainable use of forest and resources.
There are no proper legal protection for the people who fight for the forest and their rights
|
ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
Working
to strengthen the participation of cicil society in DR Congo in the
management of the forest and natural resources, through worksshops and
other capasitybuilding activities.
Supporting indigenous
peoples organisations in Brasil and Asia to enable their campaigns to
reach as many people as possible. Both in regard to improving
indigenous peoples knowledge of their rights, as well as supporting
their struggle to prove their right in legal courts.
|
ADVICE: What advice would you like to
give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a
culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade? |
We
would recommend the Secratary-General to make governments respect
indigenous and forest people’s whish and rights to live and survive in
their tropical forests, whithout fearing that their world will vanish
in the following decade.
|
