PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
GLOBAL
ALERT FOR DEFENCE OF YOUTH AND THE LESS PRIVILEGED (GADYLP) has been
involved in promoting the Culture of peace and Non-violence since its
inception in 1996.GADYLP major areas has been promoting and defending
the Human Rights of the disadvantaged and Peace Education among
youths and the less-privileged members of the civil society including
the oppressed the repressed ,the supressed ,the refugees and the
down-throdden members of the hard-to reach communities. The hard to
reach communities incude those who live in the ghetoes, the slums, the
shanties, the riverines etc. These neglected people are indeed our
primary constituency. We have recorded a remarkable
progress in these areas since 2001 Our indicator(s) is that there is
relative equity, fair-play,repect to human
rights,co-operation,harmony,trust,etc as compared in the years before
2001.
|
OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
The
lack of resources has affected our highly expected progress within the
years under review.GADYLP has no access to funding nationally and
internationally which made it impossible for the fullfiment of our
target for the first half of the decade for the culture of peace and
non-violence for the children of the world. There are
lots of myths and superstitious believe in my area of
focus(THE-HARD-TO-REACH-COMMUNITIES)that make our various intervention
programmes less-effective. Many people believe that Peace is absence of war...

ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
GLOBAL
ALERT FOR DEFENCE OF YOUTH AND THE LESS PRIVILEGED (GADYLP)has been
involved in activities that promote the culture of peace and
non-violence since its inception in 1996.GADYLP has organised
programmes by way of seminars,symposia,public
lectures,workshops.,mini-plenaries etc with the key aim of propagating
and internalising the culture of peace and non-violence in Nigeria
especially among the POOREST OF THE POOR members of the civil
society.GADYLP has also identified the neglected people among the civil
society and centred most of her peace intervention programmes to these
identified communities known as THE -HARD TO-REACH-COMMUNITIES.These
communities include those who live in the ghetoes, the shanties, the
slums, the riverines etc.GADYLP in collaborating with UN agencies in
Nigeria observes some UN days annually with Peace-related intervention
progammes/activities.E.g GADYLP marks the UN/International Day for
Peace every Sept.21st with one type of Peace -related programme or the
other. In the same vein, every Dec.5th--UN Day for Volunteerism and
Dec.10th UN-Human Rights Day etc will ever remain memorable as
GADYLP organises peace-related issues like PEACE WALK across the six
geo-political zones of Nigeria to campaign and educate the masses the
need to inculcate the culture of peace and non-violence .
GADYLP participated very actively in the UN World Conferece
Against Racism,Xenophobia and Related intolerance which took
place in Durban,South Africa in August 2001.GADYLP CO-ORDINATED a
project in the whole of the south-east of the country on the
discriminatory tentencies of a particular race in this zone who are
seen as parriahs or social out cast. This caste is known as OSU
CASTE.GADYLP condenmed this type of man's inhumanity to man and
initiated a presentation in Durban calling the attention of the
world against this type of ugly but primitive behaviour of our people.
GADYLP has been involved in organising Peace education
classes in both primary , secondary and tertiary institutions on
periodic basis. GADYLP condenmed in strong terms various
children trafficking in various forms in Nigeria.Sometimes by way of
Peaceful marches, demonstrations, walks and street by street grass-roots
sensitisation/mobilisation condeming the ugly practice and the
urgent need to apprehend the perpetrators of the darstardly acts
and brought them to justice. For example, GADYLP
sensitised the country through peaceful marches and demonstrations to
create national awareness on the very ugly but heinous crime of
children traficking in March 2005.The bad incident was reported mainly
by all the newspapers in the country but for my report I wish to refer
to the Daily Sun of monday,March 7th.2005.It was a very bold headline
thus:BEASTLY with a rider,Police rescue 64 Kids in a container..."They
were packed like sardines"(page 4)The woman identified as Alhaja Fatima
was transfering the helpless children in a container from Mokwa
in Niger State to a perhaps a nearby African Country to sale them
(children )but luck ran out of her as she was caught in Lagos at about
5pm on saturday 5th march 2005 by commited policemen who refused bribe
of five thousand Naira(N5,000)to conceal the BEASTLY ACT. The
Founder and President of GLOBAL ALERT FOR DEFENCE OF YOUTH AND THE LESS
PRIVILEGED(GADYLP)-PRINCE GOODLUCK ODIMEGWU OBI due to the track record
of GADYLP in Volunteerism in Nigeria from 1996 till date was appointed
as a focal person to co-ordinate the activities of Nigeria
volunteers/and GADYLP the focal NGO by United Nations Voluneers
Headquarters in Bonn,Germany especially for the UN International Year
of Volunteers 2001(IYV 2001)This letter of mandate was dated feb.8th
2000 and signed by Honre KPONTON on behalf of the UNV Headquarters,in
Bonn,Germany.Through this mandate GADYLP in consultation with UNV
Nigeria,Nigeria Govt.,other Civil Society Organisations initiated
a lot of intervention programmes in 2001 and other coming years
including issues in Peace Building ,promoting the culture of peace and
non-violence,conflict resolution,crises
mamagement,trust-building,negotiation,healing
process,mediation,reconciliation ,Human rights promotion,protection and
defence.Racism, xenophobia, other forms of related intolerance,
discrimination,Osu Caste system in Igbo land of the South East, Nigeria
among many others were also given an adequate coverage.
The
Founder and Project Co-ordinator of GADYLP(4th from left to right
)-Goodluck Odimegwu Obi addresses the representatives of Nigerian
Youths across the country on "the role of youths in the prevention of
violent conflict /the need to imbibe and sustain the culture of peace
and non-violence "to mark the International day of PEACE in Sept.21st
2004,in Ubulu-Ihejiofor,Imo State,Nigeria.

ADVICE: What advice would you like to
give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a
culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade? |
I
will advice the people that are involved in the implementation of the
second half of the decade of the culture of peace and non-violence to
recognise the active youth organisations globally and mobilise them
financially, technically and other-wise to assist them in their
grass-roots-focused Peace-related intervention programmes instead of
empowering the big NGOs who have a regular source of funding. The
Sec-Gen. should also try to breach the digital divide between the North
and the South as THIS GAP widens each day with the South suffering.
